Alzchem’s H1 2026: Specialty Chemicals Fuel Profit Surge

Alzchem Group delivered half-year results that underscored its strategic shift toward high-margin niche chemicals. Group revenue rose 6% to €303.9 million in the first six months of 2026, but the more telling metric was a 14% leap in EBITDA to €64.5 million. That pushed the EBITDA margin from 19.6% to 21.2% — a signal that the company is wringing more profit out of every euro of sales.

The standout performer was the Specialty Chemicals segment, which houses products such as the Kreatin brands Creapure and Creavitalis, as well as nitroguanidine for the defense sector and custom manufacturing services. Here revenue climbed 10%, while segment EBITDA surged 19%, lifting the margin to a striking 29.9%. Management attributed the gains to still-strong global demand for creatine-based nutritional supplements — well beyond the traditional sports market — and to a solid position supplying nitroguanidine to western defense contractors.

By contrast, the Basics & Intermediates segment was a drag. Revenue edged lower and EBITDA broke even, largely because of a scheduled overhaul of a carbide furnace. The maintenance work is a one-time event; the company expects it to wrap up in the second half of the year and put the furnace in shape for reliable long-term production.

Alzchem is using its current cash flows to fund ambitious capacity expansion. In Germany a new nitroguanidine plant is being commissioned, with capacity coming online gradually. At the same time the group has picked Bushy Park in South Carolina as the location for a separate nitroguanidine production site in the United States — a move it calls strategically important given rising western defense budgets. The Kreatin production footprint in Germany is also being enlarged. Against that backdrop management confirmed its full-year 2026 guidance, forecasting higher sales and earnings.

Inside the Margin Expansion Strategy

Where the Profit Lift Comes From

The 14% EBITDA gain on just 6% revenue growth points to a mix effect that has been building for several quarters. By concentrating its investment and sales effort on Specialty Chemicals — where the segment margin reached nearly 30% — Alzchem benefits both from strong underlying demand and from operating leverage as volumes rise. The Kreatin business continues to ride a wave of popularity in human nutrition that extends far beyond gym-goers. Likewise, the nitroguanidine franchise is anchored in military procurement cycles that tend to be sticky once a supplier is qualified.

Defense Spending Tailwind and US Expansion

The decision to establish a nitroguanidine production site in the United States is a concrete bet that the current geopolitical climate will sustain — or even increase — demand for ammunition-related chemicals. Choosing a location in South Carolina rather than relying solely on exports from Germany signals an intent to be a domestic supplier for US and allied defense programs, potentially shortening supply chains and reducing political risk. The ramp-up of the new German plant adds near-term volume; the US project is a longer-dated growth option.

The Carbid Furnace Overhaul: A Temporary Drag

The Basics & Intermediates segment’s lackluster showing is entirely tied to the furnace refurbishment. Excluding that, underlying demand for the segment’s products appears stable. Once the furnace is back on line in the second half, the earnings headwind should disappear, and the company expects the upgraded asset to support more efficient production for years. Markets are unlikely to penalize a one-off maintenance charge that underpins future reliability.

Valuation Check: Growth Already Priced In

For all the operational momentum, the stock’s valuation leaves little room for disappointment. The forward price/earnings ratio cited in the analysis accompanying the results is about 26, meaning investors are already paying up for the expected profit progression. Execution risk remains real: the German nitroguanidine ramp-up must proceed smoothly, the US project will consume capital before it generates returns, and the Kreatin market is gradually attracting new entrants.

What Alzchem’s Trajectory Means for Investors

  • Watch the carbid furnace restart. The overhaul is scheduled for completion in H2 2026. A smooth return to full operation would remove the single largest drag on group EBITDA and reassure on the Basics segment’s outlook.
  • Track the US nitroguanidine timeline. Alzchem has picked its site in Bushy Park, South Carolina, but construction and qualification for defense supply chains typically take years. Any update on milestones — or customer commitments — will be a material signal.
  • Assess the valuation against execution. At a forward P/E of roughly 26, the shares already discount strong growth. Investors should gauge whether the expanding capacity in Kreatin and nitroguanidine will translate into earnings quickly enough to support that multiple.
  • Monitor the Kreatin demand story. The nutrition market’s appetite for creatine remains robust, but the product is increasingly commoditized. Look for signs of pricing pressure or new competitors entering the high-purity segment that Alzchem dominates.

Risk & Opportunity Assessment

Commercial RiskMediumThe company’s above-average growth depends on sustained demand for Kreatin and nitroguanidine; a slowdown in either niche would directly erode the high-margin Specialty Chemicals segment that drives profit.
Competitive RiskLowAlzchem holds established market positions in its core products, with long-standing customer relationships especially in defense supply chains and branded Kreatin. No immediate challenger is visible in the reported results.
Regulatory RiskLowThe defense-related nitroguanidine business is subject to export controls and licensing, but the company’s move to a US production site is designed to mitigate such risks rather than indicating a current threat.
Reputation RiskLowNo environmental, product-quality or governance issues emerged from the half-year report; the carbid furnace overhaul is presented as a planned maintenance measure, not a reactive fix.
Technology DisruptionLowThe core chemistries for Kreatin and nitroguanidine are mature. While alternative production processes could emerge, no disruptive technology was flagged in the company’s disclosures.
Commercial OpportunityHighThe US nitroguanidine plant opens a large defense market, the German capacity expansions will capture growing Kreatin demand, and the custom manufacturing pipeline offers additional upside in high-value synthesis projects.
