Bajaj Finance Q1: Profit Jumps 28%, Asset Quality Improves Sharply

Bajaj Finance shares climbed nearly 9% on Friday to touch a new 52-week high of Rs 1,145 on the NSE, after the non-banking financial company reported a 28% year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 6,081 crore for the June quarter of FY27. The result comfortably exceeded analyst expectations, as net total income grew 22% to Rs 15,224 crore and assets under management (AUM) surged 24% to Rs 5,46,944 crore.

A key highlight was the significant improvement in asset quality. Gross non-performing assets (GNPA) fell to 0.96% from 1.03% a year earlier, while net NPAs improved to 0.39%. Total provisions stood at Rs 1,993 crore, including an additional Rs 296 crore in precautionary provisions. Excluding that buffer, core credit losses declined 14% year-on-year, signalling stronger repayment behaviour.

The lender added 5.10 million new customers during the quarter, taking its total franchise to 124.43 million. Return on equity (ROE) improved to 20.4%. However, business growth was uneven: while the gold loan portfolio more than doubled to Rs 21,152 crore on the back of branch expansion, the two-wheeler and three-wheeler financing book contracted 64%, and MSME lending grew just 2% amid higher defaults in that segment. Operating expenses rose due to investments in artificial intelligence and branch network expansion, though management expects efficiency gains in the coming quarters.

Behind the Numbers: Gold Loans Shine, Two-Wheeler Portfolio Fades

What Drove the Gold Loan Boom

Bajaj Finance’s gold loan portfolio more than doubled to over Rs 21,000 crore, reflecting aggressive branch expansion and strong demand in a rising gold price environment. The segment’s low credit risk and short-tenure nature have made it an attractive diversification tool, contributing meaningfully to AUM growth and asset quality improvement. This shift also partly offsets the drag from the shrinking two-wheeler and three-wheeler financing business, where delinquencies and competitive pressures remain elevated.

The Two-Wheeler and MSME Drag

A 64% contraction in two-wheeler and three-wheeler loans signals a deliberate portfolio tilt away from a segment where underwriting challenges persist. MSME lending grew just 2%, restrained by higher defaults. These segments were once growth engines for Bajaj Finance, and their decline underscores the company’s pivot toward secured, lower-risk assets. While this protects margins and asset quality in the near term, it may cap overall AUM growth rates unless the gold and consumer durable businesses can compensate fully.

Valuation and Analyst Views

The stock’s 9% surge pushed it to fresh highs, but analyst recommendations are nuanced. Mayank Jain of Share.Market by PhonePe noted that the long-term growth outlook remains positive and advised existing investors to hold, while suggesting fresh investors wait for a price correction rather than chase the rally. CLSA highlighted a 90 basis point drop in the net slippage ratio, reinforcing the credit quality story. However, elevated operating expenses from AI and branch investments mean near-term cost-to-income ratios could remain under pressure. The stock’s breakout on high volumes signals strong momentum, but the rich valuation may limit upside unless core retail loan growth accelerates beyond the gold segment.

What the Results Mean for Bajaj Finance Investors

The earnings beat and improved asset quality reinforce Bajaj Finance’s position, but the mixed segment performance and rich valuation call for a calibrated approach.

  • Existing investors may consider holding the stock, as the credit cycle is turning favourable and the gold loan foray adds a durable growth avenue. However, they should monitor the cost of the AI-driven efficiency plan, which management expects to bear fruit only in coming quarters.
  • Potential investors might treat the 9% single-day rally with caution. At Rs 1,131, the stock has run up significantly, and some analysts explicitly recommend waiting for a correction. A pullback toward key moving averages could offer a better risk-reward entry, particularly if sustained by core retail loan growth recovery beyond gold.
  • Portfolio risk from the two-wheeler and MSME segments remains a factor; any unexpected deterioration in those books could pressure provisions. Conversely, if management successfully scales gold and consumer durable loans while controlling costs, the ROE trajectory could improve further, justifying the premium valuation.

Risk & Opportunity Assessment

Commercial RiskMediumRising operating expenses from AI investments and branch expansion could pressure margins in the near term, especially if the gold loan portfolio's yields compress or the cost-to-income ratio does not decline as management anticipates.
Competitive RiskMediumThe deliberate pullback from two-wheeler and three-wheeler financing cedes market share to rivals in those segments, while the gold loan space is becoming increasingly crowded with both banks and NBFCs expanding aggressively.
Regulatory RiskLowNo specific new regulatory actions were mentioned; the NBFC sector faces the usual RBI oversight on provisioning and capital, but Bajaj Finance’s strong capital position and improving asset quality reduce near-term regulatory headwinds.
Reputation RiskLowThe steady reduction in GNPA and the proactive Rs 296 crore precautionary provision strengthen the lender’s reputation for prudent risk management, though any mis-selling allegations in high-growth segments (like gold loans) could emerge but are not indicated by the current results.
Technology DisruptionMediumThe company is investing in AI to improve operating efficiency, which could eventually disrupt its own cost structure and underwriting processes. Execution risk exists; if AI-driven productivity fails to materialise, operating leverage may remain subdued.
Commercial OpportunityHighThe gold loan portfolio more than doubled and now exceeds Rs 21,000 crore, offering a secured, high-growth avenue. Combined with the 5.1 million new customer additions, the company has significant cross-sell potential for insurance, payments, and other fee-based products.
