From ₹130 Cr to ₹193 Cr: MGL’s Sharp Quarterly Rebound

Mahanagar Gas Ltd. (MGL) delivered a classic beat on the sequential front in its June quarter earnings, shaking off a weak March quarter and sending the stock up more than 4% intraday on Thursday. Net profit stood at ₹193 crore — a 49% jump from ₹130 crore in the preceding three months — despite dropping 39.5% from the ₹319 crore recorded a year earlier. The company's revenue rose 13.9% year-on-year to ₹2,373 crore, and 15.6% sequentially, indicating healthy demand for its city gas products across Mumbai and neighbouring areas.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) climbed 32% quarter-on-quarter to ₹343 crore, with the operating margin improving from 12.7% to 14.5%. That was a marked recovery, even though it remained well below the 24% margin seen in the same quarter last year. Management has not provided explicit forward guidance, but the numbers suggest that the worst of the operating squeeze that hurt the March quarter may be easing.

Investors responded positively, pushing MGL shares to an intraday high of ₹1,151.20 on the NSE. The company, one of India’s largest city gas distributors, supplies compressed natural gas for vehicles and piped natural gas to domestic, commercial and industrial consumers across Mumbai, its adjoining metropolitan region and neighbouring districts. The quarterly result reinforced its strategic position in one of the country’s most densely populated urban gas markets.

Behind the Sequential Surge: What Drove MGL’s Margin Recovery

The Quarterly Turnaround

MGL’s sharp sequential improvement comes off a very low base. The March quarter had been marred by higher input costs — particularly spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices — and a lag in passing through price increases under the administered pricing mechanism. The June quarter likely saw some stabilisation in gas procurement costs, along with volume recovery, which together lifted EBITDA per standard cubic metre. Revenue growth of 15.6% QoQ confirms that demand momentum is intact, while the margin improvement suggests cost pressures are becoming more manageable.

The annual comparison, however, is less flattering. Last year’s June quarter margins were exceptional, benefiting from a favourable mix of low-cost domestic gas and robust pricing power during a post-pandemic demand surge. Normalisation was expected, which explains why the market shrugged off the 39.5% annual profit decline and focused on the sequential signal. For investors, the quarter signals that MGL’s earnings cycle may have bottomed out in March 2025.

Where MGL Stands in the Urban Gas Race

MGL’s monopoly-like presence in Mumbai and its extended suburbs gives it a captive customer base, but it also faces mounting scrutiny from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) on tariff structures and the push for competition. While its core market remains insulated from aggressive new entrants in the near term, any regulatory move to cap margins or open bidding for new geographical areas could alter the profitability landscape. In this context, the Q1 margin recovery is a welcome sign that the company can still expand earnings even in a cost-constrained environment, provided volumes hold up. Its ability to secure competitively priced domestic gas allocations from the government remains the single biggest swing factor for future profitability.

Investor Playbook: Key Metrics to Watch After MGL’s Q1

  • Watch volume and EBITDA per scm: MGL reports CNG and PNG volumes alongside earnings. A sustained increase in volumes, coupled with stable EBITDA per unit, would confirm that the Q1 recovery is durable, not just a bounce from the low base.
  • Track spot LNG prices: MGL uses imported spot LNG to meet peak demand. A sustained decline or even stability in Asian spot LNG prices would support margin expansion in the coming quarters. Conversely, a winter spike could quickly reverse the gains.
  • Next catalyst – Q2 earnings: The company’s September quarter results, expected by October 2026, will reveal whether the margin rebound was a one-off or the start of a trend. A second consecutive quarter of margin improvement would likely lead to consensus earnings upgrades.
  • Valuation check against peers: After the post-earnings rally, MGL trades at a premium to some regional peers like Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (IGL). Investors should assess whether the sequential recovery fully justifies the valuation gap, given the still-subdued annual growth trajectory.
  • Monitor APM gas allocation: Changes in the government’s allocation of low-cost domestic gas under the administered price mechanism can materially move MGL’s input costs. Any revision — such as a cut in APM gas for city gas distributors — would be a significant risk to margins.

Risk & Opportunity Assessment

Commercial RiskMediumDespite the sequential recovery, net profit remains 39.5% lower year-on-year, and EBITDA margin of 14.5% is well below the 24% seen a year ago. Sustained high spot LNG prices or a demand slowdown could stall the recovery.
Competitive RiskLowMGL holds a dominant, near-monopoly position in Mumbai and its suburbs, with no immediate threat of new entrants. Regulatory opening remains a long-term risk but is not reflected in current earnings.
Regulatory RiskMediumThe PNGRB’s oversight of tariffs and potential moves to introduce competition in city gas distribution could compress margins. Any reduction in APM gas allocation by the government would directly raise costs.
Reputation RiskLowNo operational, safety, or service quality issues are evident from the quarterly release or associated market commentary.
Technology DisruptionLowWhile electric vehicle adoption poses a long-term threat to CNG demand, the impact is gradual. In the near to medium term, MGL’s PNG and compressed gas volumes remain insulated from meaningful substitution.
Commercial OpportunityHighThe 15.6% sequential revenue growth and margin recovery indicate strong underlying demand and improving cost dynamics. Further volume growth, coupled with normalising gas costs, could drive significant earnings upgrades.
