Saudi Arabia’s oil-export machinery is being reshaped by the escalating security crisis in the Red Sea. With the Strait of Hormuz already under strain from the Iran conflict, the kingdom had leaned heavily on its East-West Pipeline to pump crude to Red Sea terminals, avoiding the chokepoint entirely. Now, Houthi attacks on commercial vessels near the Bab al-Mandeb strait are making that southern route untenable, forcing tankers to reverse course and sail north toward Egypt’s Suez Canal.
Ship-tracking data shows at least four Saudi-laden tankers changed direction this week before reaching the danger zone. In response, Saudi Arabia has begun offering more cargoes from Egyptian Mediterranean ports, and oil transit through the Suez Canal hit a two-and-a-half-year high during the first three weeks of July. Inflows into Egypt’s Sumed pipeline—which connects the Red Sea and Mediterranean—jumped 50% from June, underscoring the sudden shift.
The volumes involved are enormous. Since hostilities erupted, Saudi shipments from its Red Sea terminals climbed to roughly 4.9 million barrels per day, up from 700,000 to 1 million barrels previously. About 3.5 million barrels of that daily flow had been moving through Bab al-Mandeb toward Asia. Rerouting those barrels via Suez is not straightforward: the canal cannot accommodate fully loaded Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), which carry around 2 million barrels each.

The East-West Pipeline gave Saudi Arabia a vital insurance policy against a Hormuz closure, but the Houthi campaign is now testing the backup plan’s own weak point. By pushing so much crude onto the Red Sea, the kingdom has simply relocated its vulnerability from one narrow strait to another. The reversal of tankers mid-voyage signals that ship operators no longer view the Bab al-Mandeb as a manageable risk, even with naval escorts.
This shift elevates the Suez Canal from an alternative route to a primary artery for Saudi exports. The Sumed pipeline, which can bypass the canal’s draft restrictions for some crude, is becoming a critical pressure valve. The 50% jump in Sumed flows in July suggests the kingdom and its customers are scrambling to keep Asian-bound barrels moving without incurring a 20- to 30-day detour around Africa.
The VLCC Problem and Logistics Headaches
The canal’s depth limit means a fully laden VLCC must offload part of its cargo into the Sumed pipeline or transfer it to smaller Suezmax and Aframax vessels. Both options add time, cost and complexity. The longest diversion—sailing around the Cape of Good Hope—adds three to four weeks to an Asia voyage, directly inflating freight charges and war-risk insurance premiums. For refiners in India, China and South Korea, the increased voyage length also ties up working capital and strains inventory planning.
These logistical headaches are likely to reshape tanker demand. Suezmax and Aframax rates could see upward pressure as charterers seek vessels that can transit the canal without lightering, while VLCC rates on the Asia-bound route may weaken if fewer can make the journey without costly workarounds.
What This Means for Oil Prices and Refined Products
Brent crude was trading near $97 a barrel on Friday after briefly topping $100, and Goldman Sachs analysts warned that further supply disruption could push prices to $120. But the more immediate pressure may land on diesel and jet-fuel markets. Product tankers, which carry refined fuels, rely more heavily on the Suez Canal than the giant crude carriers do, because their trade routes are often shorter and more time-sensitive. Disruptions there could tighten supplies of middle distillates just as aviation and industrial demand remains robust, amplifying price spikes at the pump and in airfares.
What This Means for Shippers, Refiners and Oil Importers
For Asian oil importers and refiners: Assess exposure to Saudi crude that historically transited Bab al-Mandeb. Diversify supply sources or negotiate flexible delivery terms to account for potential 20-30 day delays from Suez or the Cape route. Monitor Sumed pipeline capacity allocations, as they will become a key rationing point.
For tanker operators and charterers: Suezmax and Aframax vessels are likely to see a rate premium as demand shifts away from VLCCs that cannot traverse the canal fully loaded. Owners with modern tonnage capable of carrying both crude and products may find attractive arbitrage opportunities. War-risk insurance costs are rising rapidly; factor them into freight quotes immediately.
For refined product buyers (airlines, trucking fleets, industrial users): Jet fuel and diesel cargoes that transit Suez face growing delivery uncertainty. Hedge a larger portion of near-term fuel needs and explore Atlantic Basin alternatives where possible. Expect regional price disconnects between European and Asian product markets if the Suez route remains threatened.
For policymakers and insurers: The International Maritime Organization and underwriting bodies may need to expand war-risk zones and clarify escort protocols. Any further escalation could trigger force majeure declarations on key oil contracts, so early dialogue between shippers and governments is warranted.
