AMD's Helios AI Servers Hit Full Production, Set for Q3 Shipment

Advanced Micro Devices has entered full production of its Helios AI server racks and plans to begin shipping them by the end of the third quarter, CEO Lisa Su confirmed at a keynote in San Francisco on Thursday. The racks combine AMD's latest MI455X AI accelerator and new Venice central processor, both manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The launch marks AMD's most aggressive attempt yet to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the data center AI chip market.

Su said customer demand was "extremely strong" and brought an OpenAI executive on stage to announce that the ChatGPT creator intends to start using Helios later this year. The move gives AMD a marquee customer for its new hardware, particularly for inference computing — the process of running user queries against trained AI models like ChatGPT.

Looking further ahead, Su estimated the total addressable market for computing will grow from $365 billion in 2025 to $2 trillion by 2030, with roughly $1.4 trillion coming from AI accelerators. She framed the opportunity as requiring an industry-wide ecosystem, noting no single company can dominate it. AMD also touted its new EPYC Venice CPU as delivering 20% more performance than Nvidia's competing processor and disclosed a collaboration with Cerebras to offer fast inference via its cloud service.
