FAA Flags Seat Installation Flaw on 453 Boeing 737 Jets
The Federal Aviation Administration proposed a new airworthiness directive Monday requiring operators of certain Boeing 737 aircraft to thoroughly inspect the installation of passenger seats. The agency said it had received a report that seats on some of the manufacturer’s narrower-body jets had been improperly secured in their seat tracks, potentially allowing them to dislodge during extreme turbulence or an emergency landing.
“A track-mounted passenger seat assembly that is installed incorrectly can disengage from the seat tracks if there is an increased load, turbulence, or emergency landing,” the FAA stated, adding that such a failure could injure occupants and block the aisle during an evacuation. Boeing said it welcomed the regulator’s decision to make its existing inspection guidance mandatory, signaling a cooperative stance.
The proposal covers three variants of the 737 family, models used extensively by major U.S. carriers as well as international airlines including Ryanair and International Airlines Group, owner of British Airways and Iberia.
