How a Charging Case Forced an Atlantic Diversion
A SWISS flight from Zurich to New York's JFK airport was diverted to Bangor, Maine, on 27 July after cabin crew spotted smoke in the forward business-class section. Pilots of the Airbus A330-300 declared an emergency (code 7700) while over the North Atlantic and landed roughly 600 kilometres short of the destination. All 208 passengers and crew were unharmed and later transported to New York.
Initial reports from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) suggested a fire in the cockpit, but a subsequent two-day inspection found no evidence of flames. Instead, investigators traced the smoke to a pair of earphones' charging case that had slipped into a seat mechanism and become trapped.
The case, equipped with a lithium battery, was damaged when the seat moved, generating heat and eventually smoke. SWISS confirmed the device had been caught in the seat, causing the overheating. The airline reiterated that such batteries are allowed in the cabin but must be kept on the passenger or in a seat pocket, never in overhead bins or checked luggage.

- Keep any device with a lithium battery on your person, in the seat-back pocket, or in a small bag placed under the seat in front of you. Overhead bins are not approved storage locations.
- Before flying, check that charging cases, wireless earphones and power banks are not cracked, swollen or showing signs of damage. A damaged battery is far more likely to overheat when jostled.
- Never use or recharge a battery-powered device during the flight unless the airline explicitly permits it on a specific device (most do not).
- If a device or case slips between seat cushions, alert a crew member immediately rather than trying to retrieve it by moving the seat, which can crush the battery.
