TAROM's Second New Boeing 737 MAX to Carry the Name Ivan Patzaichin
Romania's state-owned flag carrier TAROM will name its second new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft after Ivan Patzaichin, the multiple Olympic canoeing champion and one of the country's most celebrated sports figures.
The naming was formalised at a ceremony on Wednesday attended by Georgiana and Ivona Patzaichin, the athlete's wife and daughter, and TAROM chief executive Cristian Anghel. It follows the carrier's decision earlier this year to assign the first new 737 MAX in its fleet-renewal programme to football coach Mircea Lucescu.
The company says the choice links its fleet modernisation to values such as performance, discipline, perseverance and the ability to overcome obstacles. TAROM began naming aircraft after major Romanian sports personalities in 2024, when the name Nadia Comăneci was placed on an aircraft.
TAROM was established in 1954 and operates under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. It has been a member of the SkyTeam alliance since 25 June 2010.
Why TAROM Is Linking Its Fleet Modernisation to Romanian Sporting Greats
The naming continues a strategy TAROM began in 2024, when it put the name Nadia Comăneci on an aircraft. The company is using recognisable national figures to connect its fleet renewal with pride, performance and discipline.
National branding meets fleet modernisation
TAROM is pairing each new Boeing 737 MAX with a Romanian personality who represents excellence in a different field. The first new aircraft received the name of football coach Mircea Lucescu; the second will honour canoeing champion Ivan Patzaichin. This creates a consistent public narrative around a fleet replacement that would otherwise receive limited attention outside aviation circles.
What the announcement does not say
The company statement does not specify when the aircraft will be delivered, how many 737 MAX jets are on order, or which routes they will serve. As a result, the practical impact on TAROM's network, cost base and passenger experience remains unstated. The value of the announcement is therefore primarily reputational and symbolic rather than operational.
