NHTSA Begins Work on Door Egress Rules After Fatalities
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching a rulemaking process to require that drivers and passengers can reliably exit vehicles after a crash or power loss. The agency granted a petition calling for a “robust and obvious door egress system” in all motor vehicles, opening the door to a new federal safety standard.
The action follows a series of fatal incidents in which occupants were trapped inside Tesla vehicles with flush, electrically operated door handles after the cars lost power. Bloomberg News has documented at least 15 deaths in a dozen crashes where occupants or rescuers could not open Tesla doors before post-crash fires. The petition, submitted by a Silicon Valley engineer, argued that hidden or electronic latch systems common in electric vehicles create a “critical, life-threatening safety gap.”
NHTSA’s Thursday filing denied a separate request for a safety defect investigation but confirmed the rulemaking will begin. Michael Brooks, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, called the step “very significant” but warned that the process could take years. “I wouldn’t expect to see a final compliance date for manufacturers before 2030 even if the rulemaking proceeds swiftly,” he said.
The move adds momentum to broader scrutiny. U.S. Representative Robin Kelly introduced legislation earlier this year that would require manual door releases and means for first responders to gain access when power is lost.
