Why Shelter Afrique's Green Bond Matters

Shelter Afrique, a pan-African development finance institution, has launched its first green bond issuance, raising 60 billion CFA francs (approximately $100 million) to finance affordable housing projects in West Africa. The funds will be used to address a significant deficit of 3.5 million homes in the region, with an additional 250,000 units needed annually to keep pace with demographic growth and urbanization.

The green bond issuance is a key step in Shelter Afrique's ambition to build a more diversified and resilient platform for housing and urban development in Africa. By financing projects in the local currency, the bank reduces the risk of exchange rate fluctuations, a major concern for medium- and long-term real estate investments.
