Ukraine has expanded its drone warfare campaign into what one operator calls a 'free hunt' across the rear areas of the battlefield. The new medium-range attack drones are being used to hit Russian logistics targets roughly 20 to 300 kilometres behind the front line — a zone previously far enough from the fighting to be treated as relatively safe for supply traffic. Operators say they fly the drones over major supply roads using Starlink terminals for connectivity, then search for targets in an environment that is often poorly defended and rich with military vehicles.
Dmytro 'Liber' Zhluktenko, a former drone operator and current lessons-learned analyst with Ukraine's 413th Unmanned Systems Regiment 'RAID', told Business Insider that the traffic on those roads is so dense with military supplies that 'the hard part is not finding a target'. He added that while the area is not a '100 percent kill zone', anyone there is 'definitely in danger'. The drones occupy a gap between short-range FPV drones used near the front and long-range drones sent deep into Russian territory, allowing Ukraine to target warehouses, vehicles, transport hubs and command posts that feed the front line.
Ukrainian officials have framed the capability as a strategic shift. Taras Berezovets, head of military cooperation in the Territorial Defence Forces, said in May the previously safe areas had become 'a new kill zone', forcing Russia to take far longer to deliver weapons to the front. Then-defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov said Ukraine had begun a 'logistics blockade' against Russian forces, and the defence ministry reported a fourfold increase in the destruction of enemy logistics and supply targets in recent months. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in June the medium and long-range strike capability had produced 'serious disruption' to Russia's logistics.

For defence planners, suppliers and allied militaries, the medium-range free-hunt concept has immediate practical implications:
- Protect rear logistics, not just the front line. The 20–300 km zone is now contested, so supply convoys, depots and command posts need anti-drone defences, electronic warfare and dispersion, not only forward positions.
- Watch demand signals in the drone and counter-drone market. Ukraine's rapid expansion of this capability points to procurement interest in cheaper strike drones with long-range connectivity and in interceptors, radars and jammers needed to defend rear areas.
- Treat the fourfold destruction claim with caution. That figure comes from Ukraine's defence ministry and has not been independently verified; the operational effect is plausible, but its exact scale remains uncertain.
- Study the Starlink-enabled operational pattern. The use of satellite terminals on drones to hunt main supply routes is replicable for other militaries and raises questions about how commercial connectivity providers will respond to military use of their services.
