What Petrobras Found at the Morpho Well

Petrobras has identified hydrocarbons at the Morpho exploratory well, formally named 1-BRSA-1405-APS, in block FZA-M-59 in the deep waters off Amapá. The well sits about 175 kilometres from the coast and is being drilled in water depth of 2,886 metres. The company began drilling on 20 October 2025, the same day it received the long-awaited environmental licence from Ibama.

The Foz do Amazonas basin is one of five basins that make up Brazil's Equatorial Margin, a maritime region stretching from Guyana to Rio Grande do Norte. So far only the Potiguar basin among Brazil's five Equatorial Margin basins produces oil. Large discoveries in neighbouring Guyana and Suriname have strengthened expectations for the Brazilian side, and Brazil's EPE energy research agency projects the region could expand the country's proven reserves by more than 50% and potentially make Brazil one of the world's top four oil producers by 2030.

The announcement is an indication of oil or gas, not a confirmed commercial reserve. The well is at 2,886 metres of water depth and targets reservoirs beyond 3,000 metres, so execution will be complex.
