Why the Caramulo Show Is Staying Open Longer
The Museu do Caramulo has extended its exhibition “White Box #1: Intervalos” until 18 October, moving what was initially scheduled to close on 8 August into the museum’s autumn programme. The extension gives visitors an additional opportunity to see the show, which marks the conclusion of the first of three artistic residencies in the museum’s White Box cycle.
Curated by José Maçãs de Carvalho, the exhibition brings together original works by Catarina Leitão, Fabrizio Matos, Daniela Krtsch and João Fonte Santa. The pieces were produced during the residency and created specifically for this project, rather than selected from existing collections.
The display takes inspiration from the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Cabinets of Curiosities, the predecessors of modern museums. It uses that historical reference to explore discovery, multiplicity and the fascination with rare objects, inviting visitors to find new relationships between objects, ideas and narratives.
A catalogue documenting the works and the curatorial concept accompanies the exhibition.
What the Extension Reveals About the White Box Project
A residency cycle gaining a longer public life
The extension is notable because it shifts the project from a summer event into the museum’s autumn calendar, suggesting the institution wants the first White Box residency to remain visible beyond its original run. That could help build recognition for the two later residencies in the cycle.
The curatorial frame
By referencing Cabinets of Curiosities, the exhibition presents the four artists’ commissioned works as part of a conversation about collecting, rarity and how museums create meaning. That creates a conceptual link between the temporary show and the museum’s own role as a collection-based institution.
