Four Mathematicians Awarded the 2026 Fields Medal

The International Mathematical Union (IMU) announced the 2026 Fields Medal winners on 23 July, honouring four mathematicians under 40 for outstanding contributions. Among them is Wang Hong, a Chinese-born professor at New York University, who becomes only the third woman to receive the prize since its inception in 1936.

Wang is cited for her work with Joshua Zahl, a professor at China's Nankai University, on resolving the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture – a century-old problem originating from the Japanese mathematician Sōichi Kakeya. The two-dimensional version was settled earlier, but the 3D proof had remained elusive.

Joining her are Deng Yu (University of Chicago), John Pardon (Stony Brook University) and Jacob Tsimerman (University of Toronto). Deng, also Chinese-born, was recognised for rigorously deriving the Boltzmann equation from first principles – a step that advances Hilbert's sixth problem. Each laureate receives a 15,000 Canadian dollar award and a commemorative medal.

Both Wang and Deng attended Peking University in Beijing before completing their doctorates at MIT and Princeton respectively, underscoring the pipeline of mathematical talent from China to top US research institutions.

Wang's win as the third woman to earn the Fields Medal – after Maryam Mirzakhani (2014) and Maryna Viazovska (2022) – is a milestone in a discipline where female representation remains low. Her solution of the 3D Kakeya conjecture, a deep problem in geometric measure theory, demonstrates not only technical power but also the increasing visibility of women at the highest levels of mathematics.

The Chinese-US Academic Bridge

The awards to Wang and Deng highlight the recurring role of the Beijing-to-US academic track. Both began their undergraduate studies at Peking University, then moved to US institutions for graduate training. This pattern reflects both the strength of China's top maths programmes and the gravitational pull of US research universities, while also raising quiet questions about the reverse flow of talent and China's ability to retain homegrown medalists.

Why the Problems Matter

The prize-winning work is not abstract isolation. Deng's rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation, which describes molecular gas behaviour, helps place statistical mechanics on firmer mathematical ground. Wang's Kakeya proof advances understanding of geometric shapes in Euclidean space with implications for harmonic analysis and partial differential equations – foundations that underpin modern physics and engineering.
