Psyche’s Mars Flyby: A Gravity Boost and a Timelapse
NASA’s Psyche spacecraft completed a close flyby of Mars in May 2026, using the planet’s gravity to sling itself toward the metal-rich asteroid it was built to explore. As it approached and departed, the probe’s multispectral imager snapped thousands of frames, creating a rare, detailed record of the red planet’s surface and its icy south pole.
The space agency has now stitched those images into a timelapse video, sharing the full sweep of the encounter just weeks after the maneuver. The footage begins with a crescent Mars as the spacecraft arrives, sweeps over terraced craters and dusty plains, and pulls back to a shrinking disk with the moon Deimos visible as a faint dot.
The May 2–15 pass gave Psyche a crucial speed boost and nudged its trajectory, saving both propellant and time on the 3.6‑billion‑kilometer journey. The spacecraft remains on course to reach the asteroid Psyche—a world thought to be the exposed core of a failed planet—in 2029.
Why the Mars Encounter Matters for the Psyche Mission

Beyond the visual spectacle, the flyby served as a critical dress rehearsal for the instruments that will unlock the asteroid’s secrets. Jim Bell, the imager lead at Arizona State University, said the camera “performed brilliantly, delivering some rarely seen views of the red planet.” The team used the opportunity to fully calibrate the sensor and measure its sensitivity to scattered light—a key step for the high‑contrast imaging planned at Psyche.
Even the distance shots had a purpose. While still far from Mars, Psyche’s imager captured the moons Phobos and Deimos, demonstrating the ability to spot tiny bodies against a bright background. That capability will be essential later, when the spacecraft hunts for any moonlets that might orbit the 226‑kilometer‑wide asteroid Psyche.
