Fire at Block 339 Jurong East: What We Know

An early-morning fire at a Jurong East Housing Board flat killed a 67-year-old man and forced about 50 residents from their homes on Aug 16. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to Block 339 Jurong East Avenue 1 at 3.55am and arrived to find black smoke coming from a third-floor unit.

The blaze involved items in the flat's living room. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic. Police said they do not suspect foul play and that investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.

Residents described being woken by neighbours rather than alarms. One fourth-floor resident said she heard about three small explosions before leaving her home. Jurong Central MP Xie Yao Quan said a resident on the fifth floor called SCDF and went door to door to alert others, and that SCDF is arranging to recognise his actions.

The SCDF has not yet identified a cause, and police say there is no evidence of foul play. That puts the immediate focus on fire-scene examination and possible combustible-material or electrical sources inside the living room. Without an official cause, any conclusions about why the fire spread remain preliminary.

A cluster of recent fatal HDB fires

The Jurong East death is the latest in a series of fatal flat fires in Singapore in a short period. A July 28 fire at Block 39 Circuit Road killed a 70-year-old man; a July 31 fire at Block 309 Clementi Avenue 4 killed a 65-year-old man and injured two firefighters; and an Aug 3 fire at Block 684 Race Course Road left an 88-year-old man dead on Aug 5. No official link between the incidents has been established, but the run of early-morning fires is likely to renew public discussion about fire safety in older residential blocks.
