A $400 Drive, a $1,200 Price Tag, and a $20,000 Year
Atlanta photographer Allen Cooley used to treat hard drives as a routine business expense. In 2022 he paid $400 for a 4-terabyte drive; by late 2025, he says a comparable drive cost about $1,200. His 2025 receipts totaled more than $20,000 for storage.
So he stopped buying drives entirely this year. After two decades of commercial work, Cooley had accumulated hundreds of drives. Instead of adding more, he used Claude to build a program that catalogs what is on each drive, finds duplicate copies of files, and shows what can be safely deleted.
The result is a searchable archive he can query instead of manually organizing hundreds of drives. He estimates it saved him days, if not weeks, of work and avoided a $4,000–$5,000 storage purchase on one video-and-still campaign.

Cooley's experience is one small example of what he sees as a wider shift: AI infrastructure is consuming storage and pushing up costs. He notes the irony that he used an AI tool to avoid buying drives made pricier partly by AI-driven data-center demand.
A Threefold Price Increase for a Comparable Drive
His receipts show a 4TB drive going from $400 in 2022 to around $1,200. He does not expect prices to return to his old baseline, meaning the higher storage cost is likely a continuing budget line for creatives.
The Archive Worked Because the Problem Was Duplication
Cooley owned many drives and needed better indexing rather than more raw capacity. By finding every copy of a file, he could delete redundant versions without losing client assets.
The Video Constraint
Still-photography work can be sustained on old drives longer, but video and stills together require enough storage that he will eventually need to buy again. His savings therefore depend on the mix of jobs he books. A 30% drop in business from his 2023 peak makes avoiding new hardware purchases an important cash-flow decision.
How to Stretch an Existing Drive Collection Before Buying New Storage
The method is most useful for photographers, video editors, and freelancers who already own several drives and need to delay new hardware purchases.
- Inventory existing drives before buying new storage. Cooley cataloged hundreds of drives and avoided a $4,000–$5,000 purchase on one campaign.
- Use an AI assistant to build a searchable index, not a full migration. He asked Claude to show which drive holds each copy so he could delete redundant files and free space.
- Separate stills from video when planning storage. Stills-only work can be extended on older drives; video-plus-still jobs are the point where new purchases return.
- Quote projects using current storage prices. If a 4TB drive now costs about $1,200 rather than $400, future fees should reflect that recurring cost.
- Delay hardware when revenue is down. With his business about 30% below its 2023 peak, Cooley treats storage purchases as a cash-flow decision, not an automatic one.
