Post Offices Join the Ration Card Data Update Drive

Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has reached an agreement with the National Postal Authority to make ration card data updates available at 500 post offices across the country. The service, which begins on Friday 24 July 2026, is designed to simplify the essential step of updating personal and household records before a citizen can file an appeal against exclusion from the government's food subsidy programme. The post office option will operate every Friday and Saturday – Friday from 2 PM to 9 PM, and Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM – while the digital route via Egypt's Digital Platform remains available round the clock.

The data update is one of the prerequisites set by the 2026 social justice criteria that determine who qualifies for subsidised staple foods. After completing the update, either at a post office or online, the citizen must go to one of 1,085 supply offices or 412 upgraded service centres nationwide to submit supporting documents and formally lodge the appeal. The Ministry has instructed all local supply directorates to accept every document a citizen brings without exception, emphasising that the right to appeal is guaranteed.

To speed up the review, a dedicated committee will meet daily to examine all incoming appeals. Once a case is decided, the citizen will receive an SMS notification on the mobile number registered with the ration card system. The applicant bears full responsibility for the accuracy of the data and documents submitted, and all cases will be checked against official state databases.

The latest move is a practical response to the administrative friction that often arises when large numbers of households are re-assessed for subsidy eligibility.
