The 8th Pay Commission's Consultant Recruitment Closes Today
The 8th Central Pay Commission is accepting online applications for contractual consultant positions only until Monday, August 31, 2026. The commission is hiring up to 20 people across three categories: five Senior Consultants, five Consultants and ten Young Professionals.
The roles will support work on pay, allowances, pensions, compensation, data analysis and legal research as the commission prepares recommendations for central government employees and pensioners. The eligibility cut-off for age and experience is April 1, 2026. Senior Consultants must be no older than 45 with at least 10 years of relevant experience; Consultants must be no older than 40 with six years; and Young Professionals must be no older than 32 with four years.
Candidates need a Master's degree or MBA in Finance, Human Resources, Industrial Relations or a similar subject. Applicants with an LL.B, Bar Council or Bar Association enrolment and legal research or service-matter experience are also eligible. Working knowledge of Excel, spreadsheets and presentation tools is mandatory for all roles, and experience in pay structures, compensation or establishment matters is preferred.
The work includes studying salaries, allowances and pensions, examining existing pay structures, conducting legal research, coordinating with government departments, estimating the fiscal impact of recommendations and preparing reports. Engagement is for one year or until the commission's tenure ends, whichever is earlier, and full-time consultants cannot take another assignment.

Why the Commission Is Hiring Data and Legal Specialists
The mix of finance, HR and legal qualifications points to a commission that needs both quantitative analysis and service-matter expertise. Because the roles include estimating fiscal impact and examining representations, the hiring is not purely administrative — it feeds directly into recommendations affecting central government pay and pension costs.
What the Contract Terms Mean for Applicants
The fixed monthly pay is attractive at the senior end — ₹1.8 lakh for a full-time Senior Consultant, ₹1.2 lakh for a Consultant and ₹90,000 for a Young Professional — but the engagement is temporary. Tenure is capped at one year or the commission's remaining life, so applicants in permanent jobs must weigh a high short-term contract against the loss of continuity.
