Why Opposition Parties Are Rejecting Tinubu's 2027 Campaign Council

Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the presidency on Saturday named the leadership of the 2027 Presidential Campaign Council: former Zamfara State governor Abdulaziz Yari as Director-General and Imo State governor Hope Uzodimma as Secretary, with the APC national chairman and other senior figures as vice chairmen. Within hours, two opposition parties attacked the composition of the team rather than waiting for the formal campaign to begin.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), through National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, called the council a “rehabilitation system” for people facing unresolved corruption and public accountability questions. The party specifically questioned the inclusion of Betta Edu, a former Humanitarian Affairs Minister, and Ngozi Olejeme, former chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, and demanded that the government state how, when and by whom any cases involving the two were cleared.

The Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) issued a parallel statement through Abubakar Yusuf, describing the council as “an assembly of disconnected yes men and discredited politicians.” Yusuf singled out Yari, alleging that his time as Zamfara governor was marked by worsening insecurity and poor socio-economic conditions, and tied the appointment to broader hardship under the Tinubu administration. The party also pointed to the Osun governorship election as evidence that Tinubu cannot win in 2027.

The ADC’s Accountability Offensive

The ADC statement is aimed less at campaign mechanics than at defining the 2027 election as a referendum on Tinubu’s record and the people around him. By naming Edu and Olejeme, the party moves the debate from general policy to specific unresolved corruption questions, and it now demands a formal explanation about whether those cases were closed. That shifts the pressure onto the presidency: simply replacing or defending the appointees would keep the accountability question alive because the ADC has asked for dates, outcomes and officials responsible.

This is an early but familiar opposition strategy. In Nigeria’s campaign cycles, unresolved graft questions involving identifiable figures can become durable attack lines even before candidate registration opens, especially when the governing party is defending a difficult economic period.

APM’s Attack on Abdulaziz Yari

The APM’s statement targets the campaign council’s most senior operational figure. Its claim that Yari left Zamfara with worsening insecurity and poor socio-economic conditions is presented as direct evidence that the team cannot command public confidence. The statements released Saturday did not include a response from the APC or the named appointees, so these claims remain contestable rather than established fact. By tying Yari to national hardship, the APM is also reframing the contest from party loyalty to a judgment on poverty, unemployment and security.

What This Means for the 2027 Race

These statements do not change the council’s legal status or trigger any immediate electoral action; Nigeria is not yet in the campaign period and no candidate is on the ballot. But they set an early line of attack that may force the APC to respond before it controls the campaign narrative. The fight over the credibility of individual appointees is now part of the 2027 contest, and it is likely to intensify once the APC formally names its presidential ticket and begins public events.
