Karnataka is moving towards establishing a state-led AI University that would combine traditional academics with heavy doses of research, incubation and hands-on work with emerging technologies. Speaking at the Rising Bharat Summit 2026, IT and BT minister Priyank Kharge detailed a vision for an institution that is "phygital" – equally at home in physical and digital classrooms – and designed to feed talent into governance, healthcare, space, defence and manufacturing. The announcement builds on Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's earlier pledge to make Karnataka an "AI-native" state with India's first government-driven AI University and a dedicated AI Hub.
The minister stressed India's demographic advantage, noting the country has the world's second-largest pool of AI talent and a workforce willing to unlearn and reskill rapidly.
