Douro's Bull's Heart Tomato Festival Moves to Quinta do Mourão
On 21 August, the Douro's Bull's Heart Tomato Festival returns for its 11th edition, moving to Quinta do Mourão in Lamego, the estate owned by wine producer Falua. The event pairs one of the region's summer food icons — the large Bull's Heart tomato — with wines from Douro estates, including Ports aged in the property's historic Port Knox cellar.
The afternoon opens with a gastronomic competition: a jury of chefs, winemakers and other specialists will judge more than 20 Bull's Heart tomato samples, most of them entered by Douro wine producers. From 6pm, the celebration shifts to a dinner that combines local flavours and seasonal produce with wines from the estates taking part in the contest. The dinner costs 90 euros per person and requires prior booking and payment.
Falua is also using the occasion to open Port Knox for two special Quinta do Mourão tasting experiences on 21 and 22 August, with sessions at 11am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm and 4pm. The Silver tasting, priced at 70 euros per person, focuses on aged Tawny and White Ports. The Mothers & Sons experience, at 212 euros per person, offers a more exclusive selection that includes 30- and 40-year-old Ports and the historic Mother Wine harvests from 1972 and 1948. Reservations are limited and must be made in advance through [email protected].
The celebration extends beyond the estate: throughout August, more than 30 participating restaurants across the Douro region are featuring dishes inspired by the Bull's Heart tomato.
What the Port Knox Tastings Reveal About the Event's Business Model
Why Falua Is Putting Port Knox at the Center
The festival format gives Falua a way to turn a seasonal tomato competition into a premium wine-tourism product. By opening Port Knox only on 21 and 22 August, with four fixed tasting slots each day and limited places, the estate creates scarcity around its aged Port inventory. The price gap between the 70-euro Silver tasting and the 212-euro Mothers & Sons experience also separates casual visitors from collectors willing to pay for 30- and 40-year-old Ports and the 1948 and 1972 Mother Wines.
What the Restaurant Network Adds
The more than 30 restaurants serving Bull's Heart tomato dishes throughout August extend the event's reach well beyond Lamego. Those menus keep the festival and the Douro tomato visible to travellers across the region, while giving participating venues a seasonal dish and a link to the Quinta do Mourão event. It is a low-cost promotional loop: visitors exposed to the dish can book the paid tastings, and those who attend the festival may later encounter the same produce on regional menus.
