A Four-Star Hotel Takes Root in Naples East
Naples’ tourist map has long been drawn around its historic centre and waterfront. But a four-star superior hotel in the former industrial district of Gianturco is testing how far that map can stretch.
The Gold Tower Lifestyle Hotel opened in 2022 after a redevelopment project launched in 2019 by the Pugliese family. The original building was renovated rather than built from scratch, and the opening was delayed by the pandemic. The property sits close to the port, Capodichino airport, the central station and main motorway routes, making it a possible base for both city stays and trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Sorrento coast.
Its offer extends beyond rooms. The hotel includes the Gold Spa, the Le Gemme congress centre for meetings and corporate events, and the Terrazza Ramè restaurant and lounge, which also hosts private events. A future Icon Suite of more than 200 square metres is planned as the next stage of expansion.
What the Gold Tower Signals About Naples’ Tourism Geography
The Pugliese family’s peripheral bet
Choosing Gianturco in 2019 meant buying into a part of Naples historically associated with industry and logistics rather than leisure tourism. The rationale appears to be that lower-profile locations can still capture demand when they sit close to the main transport arteries. For the Pugliese family, redeveloping an existing building also avoided the higher cost and complexity of building in the congested historic centre.
Transport access as a substitute for centrality
The hotel’s pitch leans on movement rather than postcard views. Proximity to the port, airport and central station gives it access to different guest types, while motorway links open day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Sorrento coast. That positioning could appeal to travellers who prefer a quieter location but still want quick connections.
A broader revenue model than room nights
Gold Tower is not only selling beds. The congress centre, spa and private-event terrace create reasons for local and business traffic to use the property without staying overnight. If successful, this reduces the hotel’s dependence on seasonal tourist occupancy. The article does not publish occupancy or financial figures, so the commercial results of this strategy remain unverified.
