A Multi-Year Streaming Deal for Formula E's New Home
Disney+ and its sports arm ESPN have agreed a multi-year deal to make the streaming platforms the main broadcast home of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. From the 2026/27 season, Disney+ will show every race in most international markets, while viewers in the United States will access coverage through ESPN+. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The first race under the agreement is scheduled for 18 December 2026 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The season will feature 21 races across 13 events, including stops in Austin, Miami, Monaco and Mexico City, before concluding on 25 July 2027 in Tokyo. Disney+ subscribers will receive more than race-day coverage: the platform plans to stream practice, qualifying and races, as well as preview, analysis and highlights programmes.
The agreement lands as Formula E prepares to introduce its new GEN4 car. The series says the 600 kW racer will produce more than 815 horsepower and accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in about 1.8 seconds, roughly 30% faster than a Formula 1 car, according to the championship. Formula E also plans changes to race weekend formats aimed at increasing competitiveness and unpredictability.
The current Formula E season ends this weekend in London on 15 and 16 August. Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, described the Disney agreement as a historic moment for the championship, while Joe Earley, co-president of Disney Entertainment Direct-to-Consumer, said Formula E combines top-level competition, innovative technology and sustainability in a distinctive way.
What the Disney-Formula E Partnership Changes for Both Sides
Why Formula E Wanted Disney's Global Reach
Formula E is betting that Disney+ can lower the barriers to discovering electric racing. The series has built a global calendar but has historically had a fragmented broadcast footprint. Putting every practice session, qualifying and race on one major streaming service across most international markets is intended to bring the championship to millions of new viewers, as CEO Jeff Dodds stated. That is a distribution argument: the platform's subscriber base becomes the series's potential audience, especially in markets where Formula E has raced without a major direct-to-consumer broadcaster.
What Disney Adds to Its Live Sports Bundle
For Disney, the deal extends a deliberate push into live sport on Disney+. The platform already carries FIFA World Cup 2026-related content, selected LaLiga rights, NBA games in the Philippines and the UEFA Women's Champions League in Europe and Latin America. Adding Formula E provides a motorsport property that fits its ESPN-produced studio and documentary pipeline, including 30 for 30 and ESPN FC, and gives Disney+ a year-round international sports calendar rather than a one-off event schedule.
The GEN4 Timing Raises the Stakes
Disney is not simply buying the existing product. The 2026/27 season will be the first with GEN4 cars, which Formula E says will accelerate faster than Formula 1 machinery and provide a new visual benchmark for electric racing. If those performance claims translate on track, the Disney+ launch benefits from the new-era narrative. If the GEN4 rollout creates technical or racing-quality problems, the debut season under the new broadcast contract could leave the platform marketing a product that falls short of its promotion.
Where the United States Fits Differently
The US is the one major market carved out for ESPN+ rather than Disney+. That reflects the existing US sports streaming structure and ESPN's role as the domestic sports brand, but it also means Formula E's push for a broader American audience will depend on ESPN+ subscriptions rather than the wider Disney+ base. The deal therefore combines two commercial models: a general entertainment platform internationally and a specialist sports service in the US.
How the 2026/27 Disney+ Formula E Launch Should Shape Planning
- Rights holders and sponsors should align activation plans with the 2026/27 calendar: the first Disney-era race is 18 December 2026 in Jeddah, and the final is 25 July 2027 in Tokyo, with North American stops in Austin and Miami offering direct audience engagement opportunities.
- Disney+ product and marketing teams need to prepare promotion around the GEN4 debut, specifically the 600 kW/815 horsepower car and claimed 1.8-second 0-96 km/h acceleration, to convert the season launch into subscriber acquisition.
- Formula E teams and commercial partners should treat the expanded Disney+ content bundle — practice, qualifying, previews and highlights — as new inventory for sponsor visibility, not merely race-day coverage.
- ESPN+ US executives should track whether the GEN4 season improves US viewership enough to justify separate positioning from Disney+, since the US audience will not be reached through the main Disney+ sports push.
Risk & Opportunity Assessment
| Commercial Risk | Medium | Disney and Formula E have entered an undisclosed multi-year commitment without public audience guarantees; if GEN4 fails to deliver the promised performance or viewership, the rights investment may not generate subscriber retention. |
| Competitive Risk | Medium | Formula E will face comparison with Formula 1, especially since Formula E claims its GEN4 cars accelerate about 30% faster, and Disney+ competes with other sports streaming platforms for both rights and subscriber attention. |
| Regulatory Risk | Low | The deal covers broadcast rights across most international markets, but no regulatory approval or cross-border licensing issue is identified in the announcement. |
| Reputation Risk | Medium | The 2026/27 season is tied to the GEN4 generation; any technical underperformance or racing-format problems after new weekend changes could damage both the series and Disney's sports-brand credibility. |
| Technology Disruption | High | The GEN4 single-seater introduces 600 kW, more than 815 horsepower, and 0-96 km/h in about 1.8 seconds, positioning electric racing as a potential performance disruptor to combustion-based motorsport comparisons. |
| Commercial Opportunity | High | Formula E gains access to a global streaming platform that already carries FIFA World Cup 2026 content, selected LaLiga rights, NBA games and UEFA Women's Champions League, creating cross-promotion and new fan-content opportunities. |
