Latam and Shopee Link Up After Amazon's Exit From Brazil Mileage

Brazilian airline Latam announced on Monday (August 3) a partnership with marketplace Shopee that lets members of its Latam Pass loyalty program earn miles on purchases made through the platform. Under the agreement, registered customers accumulate 1 mile for every R$2 spent, provided they access Shopee through the Latam Pass app.

The miles are calculated on product value only: shipping costs and purchases paid with Shopee Coins are excluded. Points are credited within up to ten days after the entire order has been delivered, the company said.

The move fills a gap created in April, when Amazon ended its partnerships with Latam Pass, Livelo and Esfera. At the time, Amazon said it would stop working with airline mileage programs in Brazil and paused the associates category that offered cashback in reais or points. Latam said the Shopee tie-up is part of a strategy to connect the loyalty program to everyday consumption, turning routine purchases into air tickets, hotel stays, car rentals and other experiences.

Martin Holdschmidt, Latam Pass's general director in Brazil, said the goal is to make the program more connected to customers' lives. Shopee, controlled by Singapore-based Sea Limited and operating in Brazil since 2020, has more than 3 million registered sellers in the country. Its marketing director, Felipe Piringer, said the agreement supports the platform's effort to expand its ecosystem of partners.

Why the Shopee Partnership Matters to Latam Pass and Its Rivals

Why Latam Needed a New Online Partner

The partnership is best understood as a replacement play. Amazon's departure from Brazil's mileage ecosystem on April 1 removed one of the main ways online shoppers could earn points without traveling. Latam Pass, Livelo and Esfera all lost that channel at once. Bringing Shopee into the program restores that route, but with different mechanics: the earn rate of 1 mile per R$2 and the requirement to enter Shopee through the Latam Pass app create a controlled funnel that Amazon's broader cashback model did not have.

What Shopee Gains From the Deal

For Shopee, the deal is a customer engagement tool rather than a mileage play. By being the marketplace that earns Latam Pass miles, the platform positions itself as the preferred destination for a specific segment of Brazilian online shoppers. With more than 3 million registered sellers, Shopee has scale; the partnership adds a loyalty hook that can increase repeat visits and time spent in the app. Piringer framed it explicitly as ecosystem expansion.

The Economics of 1 Mile per R$2

In raw terms, members earn half a mile for every real spent on eligible purchases. Whether that is attractive depends on how those miles are redeemed — a calculation Latam did not disclose. The conditions also matter: excluding shipping and Shopee Coins concentrates the benefit on product purchases and may reduce the effective return for shoppers who use those payment options. The ten-day credit delay after full delivery is an operational detail consumers should note, especially for split shipments.

How the Deal Reshapes Competition for Livelo and Esfera

Livelo and Esfera were hit by the same Amazon exit in April. They remain active programs with their own retail partners, but this announcement gives Latam Pass a high-profile e-commerce channel that its rivals have not publicly matched. The broader trend is visible here: Brazilian loyalty programs are leaning harder on e-commerce and platform partnerships as traditional airline and credit card channels mature. How much this moves the needle will depend on whether shoppers actually change their marketplace habits — a behavior shift that is hard to predict from the announcement alone.

How Mileage Collectors Can Make Use of the Shopee-Latam Pass Deal

  • Use the Latam Pass app as the entry point to Shopee: purchases made directly on Shopee's site or app are not covered by the agreement.
  • Remember that only product value counts: shipping fees and orders paid with Shopee Coins will not generate miles.
  • Wait for the full order: points are credited within up to ten days after the entire order is delivered, so partial deliveries delay the credit.
  • Weigh the rate against redemption values: at 1 mile per R$2, a member earns half a mile per real spent; the real benefit depends on what those miles buy when redeemed.
  • Compare before shifting all online spending: Amazon no longer partners with Brazilian mileage programs, but Livelo, Esfera and other channels still offer accumulation options with different rules.

Risk & Opportunity Assessment

Commercial RiskLowThis is a marketing alliance with limited capital commitment; the main exposure is that the program fails to attract meaningful spending rather than Latam incurring large costs.
Competitive RiskMediumAmazon's exit created a vacuum among e-commerce mileage partners, and Latam Pass is filling it quickly with Shopee, putting pressure on Livelo, Esfera and other programs to strike similar deals.
Regulatory RiskLowNo regulatory change was announced; the agreement operates within existing loyalty-program rules, with the main exposure being standard consumer-disclosure obligations around crediting terms.
Reputation RiskLowIf exclusions and the ten-day credit delay are poorly communicated, members could perceive the offer as less generous than expected, but no current reputational issue is known.
Technology DisruptionLowThe partnership relies on existing app and marketplace infrastructure; no new technology or platform shift is involved.
Commercial OpportunityMediumShopee's more than 3 million registered sellers and Latam Pass's member base create a large potential audience; if a meaningful share of members route purchases through the app, both companies gain engagement and transaction data.
