MMD Africa’s Expanded Line-Up Takes Centre Stage

MMD Africa will use Electra Mining Africa 2026 to demonstrate a significantly broader range of mining and material-handling technologies, combining its traditional fixed-plant solutions with the newly added MAGNA range of mobile crushing, screening and conveying equipment. The company has been appointed the official Southern African distributor for MAGNA, Terex’s heavy-duty mobile brand, allowing it to offer a fully integrated portfolio for the first time.

On its stand, YE01, MMD Africa will display its core Mineral Sizers, Apron Plate Feeders, Sizer Stations and In-Pit Sizing and Conveying (IPSC) systems alongside the wider MAGNA range. A highlight will be the Southern African debut of the MAGNA MT120J Jaw Crusher. The company wants to show how fixed and mobile technologies can be combined to tackle material movement inefficiencies across both mining and quarrying operations.

The move comes as mining companies face deeper open pits, rising haulage costs, more complex orebodies, shortages of skilled labour and growing pressure to decarbonise. MMD Africa’s pitch is that its expanded, integrated offering can help operators raise productivity while keeping total ownership costs under control, backed by decades of local engineering expertise and aftermarket support.

Why Integrated Crushing and Conveying Matters Now

From Components to a Complete System

By adding the MAGNA mobile range alongside its well-established fixed installations, MMD Africa is positioning itself as a single-source supplier for the entire material-handling chain. That shifts the conversation from selling individual machines to delivering systems that can be tailored to a specific pit’s geology, depth and output targets. It also means the company can now provide a mobile crushing answer for contractors and shorter-life projects where a permanent plant would be uneconomic.

The Deeper-Pit Problem and the IPSC Answer

As open pits deepen, truck haulage costs explode because each additional metre of depth increases cycle times and fuel burn. In-Pit Sizing and Conveying systems attack that problem by crushing material near the face and moving it on conveyors instead of haul trucks. MMD Africa has built much of its reputation on IPSC, and coupling it with MAGNA’s mobile units gives mine planners more flexibility to start with mobile crushing in one section while a permanent Sizer Station is installed in another, smoothing the transition to conveyors without interrupting production.

Competitive Ripples

The new distribution deal puts MAGNA’s heavy-duty mobile equipment into a territory where it previously lacked a dedicated, well-resourced local partner. That could heat up competition with other mobile equipment distributors who had a clearer run in Southern Africa. For MMD Africa, the expanded portfolio raises its relevance with larger mining groups that prefer to deal with fewer, more capable suppliers.

What Mine Operators Should Look for at the Show

  • Visit stand YE01 to see the MAGNA MT120J Jaw Crusher in person and compare it with MMD’s fixed Sizer Stations in the same setting. The engineering team will be available to discuss specific site conditions.
  • Ask about combined fixed-and-mobile simulations. Mine planners can explore how a phased approach – mobile crushing now, permanent IPSC later – could reduce upfront capital while still locking in longer-term truck-cost savings.
  • Request a total-cost-of-ownership comparison using your own haulage data. MMD Africa’s engineers can model how deeper pit extensions change the economics of trucks versus conveyors.
  • Probe the aftermarket proposition. With the MAGNA distribution deal comes local parts holding and service; verify lead times and support levels for the mobile fleet.

Risk & Opportunity Assessment

Commercial RiskLowExpanding into mobile equipment distribution through a major brand like MAGNA is a measured step that leverages existing engineering and customer relationships; no large capital-at-risk is signalled.
Competitive RiskMediumMMD Africa’s ability to bundle fixed and mobile solutions may prompt established mobile-equipment distributors in Southern Africa to react with sharper pricing or new partnerships.
Regulatory RiskLowNo regulatory change is flagged; the products are known technologies operating within existing mining equipment standards.
Reputation RiskLowReliability of the newly added MAGNA mobile range will be closely watched by early adopters, but the Terex backing and MMD’s aftermarket promise mitigate this.
Technology DisruptionLowThe equipment – Sizers, jaw crushers, conveyors – is proven; the innovation is in combining them into integrated systems rather than in introducing untested technology.
Commercial OpportunityHighBecoming a single-source supplier for both fixed and mobile material-handling opens up larger contracts and deeper relationships with mining houses that are under pressure to rationalise their vendor lists.
