German defense group Rheinmetall has lifted the veil on a new guided missile frigate design, the GMF 140, a 6,000-tonne concept it says is built for NATO and allied fleets confronting advanced air, missile and submarine threats. The US Navy is already committed to the smaller FFX frigate based on the Legend-class cutter, while Canada is progressing with 15 River-class guided missile destroyers derived from the UK's Type 26 design. Mexico, which cut its SIGMA light frigate order from eight ships to one, is seen as the most plausible candidate, though its current fleet is built around patrol vessels and missile boats rather than large surface combatants.
