Finding a Japanese Part Inside Russia's S8000 Missile

Ukraine has publicly identified a Japanese-made component inside a new Russian cruise missile, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of international export controls on dual-use goods. At a briefing in Kyiv on 29 July, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said a missile the Ukrainian military calls the "S8000 Banderoil" — the Russian designation remains unknown — contained a Japanese inertial module manufactured in May 2021. The module is used to detect motion and orientation, a critical part of a missile's guidance system.

The weapon, a cruise missile that Russia has been firing into southern Ukraine including from positions in occupied Crimea, flies at 550–600 km per hour, a speed Ukrainian interceptor drones cannot reliably handle.
