Why Russian Grad Rocket Launchers Are Disappearing Near the Front
Russia’s BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher, once a staple of area bombardment, is fading from front-line sectors in Ukraine. Ukrainian servicemen attached to the 115th Brigade report that the truck-mounted system, which fires 122 mm rockets, is now rarely seen close to the line of contact. The reason is increasingly clear: the battlefield is saturated with Ukrainian drones, and any artillery that moves forward quickly becomes a target.
Under constant aerial surveillance, Russian commanders have pulled much of their heavy artillery deeper into the rear. In many areas, the 152 mm Msta-S self-propelled howitzer has become the main source of fire support for infantry. According to a Ukrainian soldier who goes by the callsign Hektor, Russian self-propelled guns are typically positioned 25 to 30 kilometers behind the front. That distance is deliberate—it places them beyond the easy reach of many drone teams while still allowing them to strike near the line of contact.
The BM-21 Grad simply cannot match that safe stand-off range. To deliver its rockets, it must move closer, and that exposes it to detection and precision strikes by Ukrainian units that actively hunt such systems. Hektor said Grads are now “rarely used” in his area because drone battalions have made them too dangerous to risk. The longer-range Tornado multiple launch rocket system still appears occasionally but not frequently enough to define the rhythm of fire; the burden has shifted onto Msta-S batteries that can shoot and relocate quickly from safer depths.
How Drone Dominance Reshapes Russian Fire Support
The Drone Calculus: Survival Over Volume
The withdrawal of Grad launchers is not a simple equipment rotation. It reflects a battlefield where the cost-benefit arithmetic of artillery has been rewritten by persistent overhead surveillance. Rocket barrages that once offered rapid, wide-area suppression now come with a high probability of losing the launcher itself. Ukrainian drone teams can spot a Grad’s firing signature and cue counter-battery fire or loitering munitions in minutes. The Russian response—pulling the systems back—acknowledges that survivability now outweighs sheer volume of fire.
Range Becomes the Decisive Metric
Msta-S howitzers, with their 24-kilometer-plus range (extended by some munitions), can operate from depths that complicate drone prosecution. They are also tracked and armored, making them more mobile if they must displace. This shift toward longer-range, self-propelled guns matches Hektor’s observation that the frontline fire support burden now falls on these systems, while Grads are reserved for rare moments when target density or desperation overrides the risk. It is a tactical adaptation born of Ukrainian air dominance over the battlefield, achieved not by aircraft but by thousands of small unmanned systems.
Infantry Tactics Mirror the Artillery Problem
The artillery story sits inside a broader change in how Russian forces fight. Hektor describes assaults still led by small infantry groups of recently mobilized troops with minimal combat experience. Their immediate goal is often survival, not seizing ground. These units try to use weather—heavy fog—to reduce drone visibility and buy a brief window for movement. Night, once a traditional cloak for infantry, has lost much of its protective value because thermal imagers on drones make soldiers easier to spot in darkness. The Grad’s retreat fits this pattern: anything that relies on closing distance to be effective is being neutralized by the drone threat.
What the Shift Means for Artillery Doctrine and the Defense Industry
The tactical realignment carries implications for artillery design, training, and defense planning:
- Stand-off range is now a survivability requirement. Systems that must operate inside 15–20 km of a drone-rich front are being priced out of the battle. Future self-propelled guns and rocket artillery will need either longer reach or active protection suites that can defeat low-cost loitering munitions.
- Cheap drones force expensive countermeasures. The fact that a Grad—a relatively low-value asset—is being pushed out by drones that cost a fraction as much underscores the asymmetry. Defense ministries will need affordable, layered drone defenses to make short-range tube and rocket artillery viable again.
- Thermal signature management becomes critical. Hektor’s note that troops are easier to spot at night should accelerate investment in multispectral camouflage, decoys, and tactics designed to mask thermal emissions for both infantry and artillery.
- Artillery doctrine must integrate a drone counter-battery clock. The time from firing to drone detection is now a primary variable. Shoot-and-scoot cycles, autonomous fire units, and rapid relocation drills are no longer optional—they are the price of survival in a transparent battlefield.
