The scenario captures a persistent challenge in the modern energy sector: massive streams of operational data from sensors, meters and automated analytics detect deviations, but they rarely provide enough context to distinguish a genuine threat from a minor blip. Many energy organisations still treat network cameras purely as security tools — watching perimeters and recording trespassing. Yet forward-looking operators are now using the same cameras as visual sensors that complement instrumentation, helping teams understand not just that something changed, but what changed and why.

The 2026 Axis Perspectives Report found that 38 percent of organisations now use video for business intelligence, up from just 20 percent a year earlier, and 42 percent deploy it to support operational efficiency. For energy operators, this means connecting cameras with SCADA, protection relays and condition-monitoring platforms so that an alarm automatically pulls up the relevant camera view, directs a pan-tilt-zoom camera toward the event, or retrieves footage from the moments before and after the anomaly.

Thermal and thermometric imaging add another layer, allowing operators to see hot-spots in darkness and monitor temperature trends alongside visual evidence of debris, vapour or pooling liquid. None of this replaces traditional sensors; it gives operators the scene in which the sensor reading changed, turning “temperature rising” into “debris against the cooling fin, no immediate failure risk, send a mechanic tomorrow.”

Better Decisions, Fewer Truck Rolls

Energy facilities generate a high volume of alerts — many from temporary conditions, wildlife, maintenance work or sensor noise. Visual verification lets control-room staff separate false alarms from real incidents quickly. A motion alarm at a solar farm that turns out to be an animal can be dismissed without a site visit. A pressure alert near a pipeline that coincides with scheduled work can be cross-checked against the crew’s location. Conversely, when a small temperature rise appears alongside vibration or a visual anomaly, an experienced operator can connect the dots and act before a failure occurs.

Remote visibility also curbs unnecessary exposure to hazardous environments. Explosion-protected cameras let teams inspect gauges, processes and conditions in areas with combustible gases or high-voltage equipment, reducing avoidable truck rolls while ensuring the right specialists are sent when a site visit is genuinely needed.
