Sevastopol Regains Full Electricity Supply

At 15:32 on 19 July, the Sevastopolenergo utility announced that electricity supply had been restored to all consumers in Sevastopol, ending a period of rolling blackouts that began in late June after a drone attack damaged energy infrastructure.

The disruptions started on 21 June when a Ukrainian military drone strike knocked out parts of the power system. Initially, a temporary consumption restriction schedule was imposed, later evolving into a “2 through 6” regime—two hours of power followed by six hours of outage. As the supply deficit worsened, the schedule tightened to “3 through 3,” and on 14 July the operator resorted to uncontrolled rotational shutdowns after another nighttime strike.

With the restoration, the utility cautioned residents not to switch on all household appliances at once. A sudden spike in load immediately after reconnection could cause repeat accidents and overloading of the network.

The fact that normal supply has returned does not signal a fully repaired system. The explicit warning against simultaneous appliance use reveals that the network is running with extremely narrow reserve margins. Any sharp demand surge—common when power returns after a prolonged blackout—could trigger voltage instability or overloads, potentially throwing consumers back into darkness.

The Next Blackout Could Be One Overloaded Appliance Away

The restoration is explicitly conditional: supply is available “until the next command from the dispatcher to impose restrictions.” This phrasing underscores that the grid remains under tight operational control, not in a state of robust resilience. The underlying vulnerability persists. Any new attack on energy infrastructure, as seen on 14 July, could instantly reverse the situation. Moreover, the progressive deterioration from the initial 2/6 schedule to full unscheduled outages shows how quickly the balance can tip. For now, the city’s electricity supply is stable only as long as consumption stays below an undisclosed but evidently thin threshold.
