Salmonella Outbreak Traced to Jalapeño Peppers from Mexico
Federal health officials have identified jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, as the source of a multistate Salmonella outbreak. The peppers were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors and primarily supplied to restaurants and wholesale outlets, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
After being alerted to the outbreak, Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA immediately removed the affected jalapeños from their supply chains. QDOBA has stopped serving jalapeños entirely. The CDC and FDA have stated that, given these swift actions, there is no ongoing risk to consumers from these restaurant chains in connection with this outbreak.
The FDA is currently investigating whether any of the contaminated peppers reached grocery stores. If retail distribution is confirmed, additional public recalls may be announced.
What This Means for Consumers and the Restaurants Involved
Chipotle and QDOBA Act Quickly
The rapid removal of the implicated product by Chipotle and QDOBA demonstrates the industry’s strengthened food-safety protocols. By cutting off the supply early, both chains have minimized potential reputational damage and prevented further illnesses. The CDC’s explicit statement that there is no ongoing risk from those establishments reinforces the effectiveness of their response.
What We Still Don’t Know on the Retail Side
The primary distribution channel for Coast Citrus Distributors was foodservice, but the FDA is not yet ruling out that some of the peppers may have reached consumer retailers. Until that assessment is complete, there is a small degree of uncertainty for shoppers. The agency advises consumers to check with their place of purchase about the origin of any jalapeños they have at home.
Consumer Guidance During the Outbreak
Check the source: If you have purchased jalapeño peppers recently, ask the store or restaurant about the supplier. Avoid peppers confirmed to be from Coast Citrus Distributors.
Watch for FDA recalls: Visit the FDA’s recalls page for any further announcements. If a recall is issued for peppers you have at home, discard them immediately and do not consume.
Symptoms to watch: Salmonella infection typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most people recover within 4 to 7 days without treatment, but seek medical care if you experience diarrhea and a fever above 102°F, persistent vomiting that prevents keeping liquids down, or dizziness when standing up. These signs may indicate dehydration or a more severe infection.
Children under 5, adults 65 and older, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness and should seek medical advice promptly if symptoms appear.
