Where a woman lives can significantly alter her chances of surviving ovarian cancer, even when she receives the same evidence-based medical treatment, according to a new study published in JAMA Network Open. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh analyzed data from over 2,500 Black and white women treated at a single academic medical center and paired each patient's neighborhood with the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)—a measure that captures factors like poverty, housing quality, and access to transportation.

The findings are stark: overall, living in a high-SVI area was linked to a 20% higher risk of death from ovarian cancer. But the burden fell disproportionately on Black women. While white women in high-vulnerability neighborhoods saw a modest 10% increase in mortality risk, Black women in similar areas faced a 77% higher hazard compared to their white counterparts, and a 60% higher hazard even after accounting for residential context. The study is the first to examine the interaction between race and neighborhood-level social vulnerability in ovarian cancer outcomes using a cohort of patients who all received guideline-concordant care in the same health system. This design helped isolate the effect of place-based factors from differences in treatment quality.
