Researchers from the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital pooled data from nine studies covering 480,479 adults aged 35 to 84, with a median follow-up of 14 years. The group was 53% female and included both generally healthy people and people with a history of heart problems.

The review found that people who climbed stairs regularly had a 39% lower risk of dying from heart-related causes and a 24% lower risk of dying from any cause compared with people who rarely used stairs. A sub-analysis pointed to about six flights of stairs, or roughly 60–70 steps per day, as the point at which much of the cardiovascular benefit appeared.

Stair-climbing acts as short bursts of vigorous physical activity. With more than a quarter of adults worldwide not meeting recommended activity levels, the researchers argue it is a realistic, scalable way to add movement without a gym or structured workout. Some studies in the review suggested more stair use was linked to larger benefits, but even small increases showed a measurable signal.

However, the review is observational. Many studies relied on self-reported stair use and measured it inconsistently, so the authors and outside cardiologists caution that stair-climbing itself has not been proven to prevent heart disease.
