The Story: Aaron Pierre Joins HBO's 'Lanterns' as John Stewart

HBO has officially secured its John Stewart. The network announced that Aaron Pierre, known for his breakout performance in Netflix's Rebel Ridge, will star as the Green Lantern John Stewart in the upcoming series Lanterns.

The show, which does not yet have a release date, will follow Stewart as a new recruit to the intergalactic peacekeeping force, pairing him with veteran Lantern Hal Jordan to solve a "dark, earth-based" murder mystery. While Pierre's deal is done, the role of Hal Jordan remains unfilled, though Deadline reports that Kyle Chandler is in talks to take on the part.

Lanterns is one of the flagship projects in Warner Bros. and DC Studios' new interconnected universe, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The series joins other announced titles like Superman: Legacy and Creature Commandos, signaling a fresh start for the DC brand on screen.

Why This Casting Matters to DC's New Universe

A Fresh Face for a Beloved Character

Pierre's casting brings a rising actor to a role that has been largely absent from live-action since the early 2000s. John Stewart is a fan-favorite Green Lantern, first popularized on television in Justice League Unlimited, but hasn't had a live-action leading role since. Pierre, who impressed critics in Rebel Ridge and Old, is seen as a strong physical and dramatic fit for the heroic marine-turned-cosmic cop.

The Challenge and Opportunity of the New DCU

Lanterns represents a key test for the Gunn-Safran strategy: blending character-driven storytelling with a shared universe. By casting a relatively fresh face as Stewart, and potentially pairing him with a veteran in Chandler, the series aims to attract both new viewers and longtime fans. Pierre's selection also signals DC's commitment to diversity in its reboot, as Stewart is one of the most prominent Black superheroes in comics.
