BS12's Eight-Week Gundam Marathon Begins August 9
Starting August 9, Japanese satellite broadcaster BS12 TwellV will air eight Mobile Suit Gundam theatrical films every Sunday evening at 7 p.m. JST under its “Sunday Anime Theater” banner. The lineup spans the franchise’s earliest and most iconic big-screen releases, all available without any subscription or paywall.
The series opens with the original first Gundam film trilogy, chronicling young Amuro Ray’s accidental enlistment as the pilot of the experimental mobile suit Gundam and the desperate battles of the White Base crew. It continues with the three Mobile Suit Z Gundam films that deepen the Universal Century conflict, followed by Char’s Counterattack, the climactic showdown between Amuro and Char Aznable. The final week features the free-TV premiere of Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island, a 2022 film that revisits and expands a single, famously emotional episode from the 1979 television series.
Why a Free Gundam Marathon Still Commands Attention
BS12’s decision to program an uninterrupted eight-week Gundam block is both a nostalgic nod and a calculated audience play. The franchise, now nearly half a century old, retains a massive multi-generational fanbase, and free-to-air marathons consistently draw strong ratings in Japan’s fiercely competitive Sunday evening slot.
The Channel’s Positioning
BS12 TwellV, a free satellite channel, relies on advertising revenue and often uses high-profile anime catalog titles to boost viewership. Scheduling the entire 40-year arc from the original trilogy to Cucuruz Doan’s Island — the latter still relatively fresh in home-video markets — creates a binge-friendly package that can capture both long-time fans and younger viewers discovering the series through recent Gunpla or streaming exposure.
The Doan Factor
The inclusion of Cucuruz Doan’s Island as a free-TV first is a particular hook. The film, which reimagines a single episode into a full feature, was a modest theatrical success and has since been available only through paid rental or purchase. Its presence in the line-up gives the marathon a “new” element without licensing cost hurdles that would accompany a brand-new release, making the schedule economically efficient while still offering something viewers haven’t seen on television before.
