The Eclipse Over France: Where and When to Watch
On Wednesday, 12 August, the Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow that will sweep across the Northern Hemisphere. While the path of totality runs through Russia, Greenland, and northern Spain, France will experience a deep partial eclipse in the late afternoon and early evening. At its peak, just before sunset, the Sun will be reduced to a sliver along the Atlantic coast, with an obscuration rate of 99.6% in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Further north, in Dunkirk, about 10% of the solar disk will remain visible.
The entire event will unfold between roughly 19:30 and 21:30 local time, with maximum coverage occurring around 20:15–20:30 depending on location. Because the eclipse takes place so close to sunset, the phenomenon will appear low on the western horizon. Clear, unobstructed views—such as those from Atlantic beaches—offer the best chance to see it, provided cloud cover or coastal mist doesn't interfere. This will be the most significant partial eclipse visible across France since the total eclipse of 1999. The next total solar eclipse on French soil will not occur until 3 September 2081, when the path of totality will cut across the centre of the country, including Paris.

Even a partial eclipse causes a rapid, predictable drop in photovoltaic generation, followed by an equally sharp ramp-up as the Moon moves away. In France, where solar capacity has grown substantially in recent years, the eclipse coincides with the late-afternoon demand peak—a period when the grid already relies heavily on dispatchable generation. While French grid operator RTE regularly prepares for such events with contingency reserves, the 12 August eclipse adds an extra layer of complexity because the steepest decline in solar output happens just before sunset, potentially compressing the window for conventional plants to compensate. No specific data from this year’s preparations has been released, but the dynamics are similar to those experienced during the March 2015 eclipse that affected much of Europe.
For astronomy enthusiasts and the general public, the eclipse is a rare visual spectacle rather than a concern. The combination of low sunlight, cooling temperatures, and a possible breeze as the land warms unevenly can create a brief, eerie twilight well before actual dusk.
How to Safely View the Partial Eclipse
- Use certified eye protection only. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe. Only ISO 12312-2:2015 compliant eclipse glasses block 100% of harmful UV rays and protect retinas from permanent, painless damage.
- Find an unobstructed western horizon. Since the Sun will be very low in the sky, high viewpoints are unnecessary—beaches, open fields, or west-facing shores provide ideal sightlines. Check local weather for low clouds or coastal mist that could obscure the view.
- Mark your calendar for the next one. If you miss this eclipse, another partial event will cross southern Spain on 2 August 2027 and again on 26 January 2028. The next total eclipse visible from France will not occur until 2081.
