iPhone Users Can Now Ditch the Plastic Navigo Card

After launching on Android in early July, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) has begun rolling out the digital version of the annual Navigo pass for iPhone. The update to the IDFM app, now live on the App Store, lets subscribers transfer their annual or senior passes (for users over 62) into Apple Wallet and tap their phone at gates instead of a plastic card.

The deployment is still phasing in, and IDFM has acknowledged that not every eligible user can install it immediately. “Everyone can’t install it yet, but we should have a 100% rollout in the coming days,” the authority said. The change was noticed early by tech-savvy users who spotted the new “transfer my annual Navigo” option in the app.

The process requires launching the IDFM app, going to “my contracts,” choosing the transfer option, and touching the physical card to the back of the iPhone twice — once to initiate and once to complete the move, along with adding a profile photo. The pass then appears in Apple Wallet, ready for use on RATP gates, buses and trams.

One important consequence: once the pass is moved to the phone, the physical card is automatically disabled to prevent fraud or double usage. There is no way to use both in parallel. While a welcome step for millions of daily commuters, the feature still excludes imagine R student pass holders, who will have to wait until the start of the 2027 academic year.

What the Digital Shift Means for Paris Commuters

A Gradual Rollout That Leaves Some Waiting

This marks the completion of the core annual pass digitalisation on both major mobile platforms, but the pace of deployment reveals the operational challenges IDFM faces. Android users got the feature in early July; iPhone users are only now gaining access, and even then not all at once. The promise of full availability “in the coming days” suggests a deliberate, cautious release cycle rather than a one-click switch.

The biggest gap remains the student-oriented imagine R pass. With the rollout pushed to late 2027, a large demographic of heavy public-transport users — many of whom are digital natives accustomed to having everything on their phone — will remain tied to a physical card for at least another year. IDFM has not explained the technical or contractual reason for the delay, but it likely involves validation of age and institution status that has not yet been digitised for the Apple Wallet pathway.

What It Really Changes for Daily Life

For iPhone-carrying annual subscribers, the practical gain is clear: one less card in the wallet and the convenience of tapping a phone that is already in hand. During rush hours or rainy mornings, not having to fumble for a separate card can shave seconds off each journey. There is no cost or subscription change — the price of the pass remains unchanged. The only risk is for users who forget their phone or let the battery die, because the deactivated physical card no longer works as a backup.

How to Make the Switch — and What to Watch Out For

  • Check your app version: Make sure the IDFM app is updated to the latest version on the App Store. If the option to transfer your pass isn’t visible, wait a few days — IDFM says the rollout will reach all users shortly.
  • Follow the transfer steps exactly: Open the app, go to “mes contrats,” select “transférer mon Navigo annuel,” and place your physical card against the back of the iPhone when prompted. Do this twice and add a photo. The pass will appear in Apple Wallet automatically.
  • Remember your backup: Once transferred, your plastic Navigo card becomes inactive. If your phone battery is unreliable, consider carrying a portable charger or waiting until you’re confident the digital version works flawlessly on your daily route.
  • imagine R users, don’t bother yet: Student and youth pass holders cannot use this feature until the 2027 school year. No workaround exists.
