The pop-country artist told Condé Nast Traveler that she has carried her Pro Tools recording setup for many years — an Apollo interface, a microphone and a laptop — so she can write and record music from hotel rooms between shows. Her latest album, Little Miss Twain, draws on songs she wrote and produced earlier in her career, with themes reaching back to her teenage years.

In the interview, Twain also recalled her first business-class flight from Toronto to Nashville after signing her record deal, when smoking was still allowed on planes. She said she was struck by the better food and by the odd experience of wondering whether she could object to cigarette smoke in a premium cabin.

Her current routines are built around comfort and control. She prefers touring by bus because she can settle in without unpacking each day, packs in categories, and requests a good blender and fresh ingredients such as spinach, avocados and tomatoes in hotel rooms so she can make her own vegetarian snacks instead of calling room service. She named Quebec City and Egypt among her favorite places to stop or visit, and said she plans her first trip to India — specifically Hyderabad — in January because of friends there and the country’s vegetarian food.

Twain also explained why she lives on the French-speaking side of Switzerland: it lets her maintain the French she grew up with in Ontario, while offering lakes, valleys and glaciers within a short drive — plus the four seasons she says she never wants to give up.
