A Half-Million-Year-Old Bone Retoucher Found at Boxgrove

A rare bone tool crafted from the dense outer layer of an elephant or mammoth bone has been identified at the Boxgrove archaeological site in West Sussex, England. Dating back nearly 500,000 years, the implement is now the oldest known elephant bone tool in Europe and offers a fresh window into the mental capabilities of early humans.

Researchers from University College London and the Natural History Museum, London used 3D scanning and electron microscopy to re-examine the roughly triangular fragment, which measures about 11 cm long. The analysis uncovered distinctive impact marks, notches and tiny embedded flint flakes, confirming that the object had been deliberately shaped and repeatedly used as a hammer to repair and sharpen stone cutting tools—a technique known as retouching or knapping.

Lead author Simon Parfitt described the find as a showcase of ancient ingenuity, noting that elephant bone would have been a rare but highly useful resource, chosen for its exceptional hardness and durability. Unlike the bone of more common animals, its dense cortical structure could withstand repeated blows, making it an ideal “soft” hammer for precise flake removal without shattering the stone edge.

What the Bone Tool Reveals About Early Human Cognition

The discovery challenges any notion that early humans at this time lacked the ability to plan ahead or to value rare materials. The deliberate selection, shaping and repeated use of elephant bone—when plentiful antler or smaller mammal bone was available—points to a calculated choice based on a functional understanding of material properties.

The tool’s role as a retoucher indicates a relatively advanced technological toolkit. By maintaining sharp, carefully shaped handaxes, these toolmakers could more efficiently butcher large animals, process resources and perhaps gain an edge in a demanding Ice Age landscape. The fact that the bone was kept and reused, rather than being discarded after a single task, underscores a level of foresight that archaeologists once associated only with later hominins.
