A Tragedy Etched in the Heart of Wallonia
On August 8, 2026, at exactly 8:10 a.m., the names of 262 coal miners who perished in the Bois du Cazier disaster seventy years ago will be read aloud, and the colliery bell will toll 262 times. The ceremony, held at the foot of three slag heaps in Marcinelle, in Belgium's Hainaut province, revives the memory of the country's worst mining catastrophe. On that morning in 1956, a poorly secured mine wagon in a lift cage tore away cables and pipes, spilling oil that ignited a fire deep underground.
Of the 275 men who were working below the surface, only 13 escaped alive. The bodies of 14 miners were so badly burned or fragmented that they could never be identified. For seven decades, they have lain as the 'Unknowns' in the cemetery overlooking the Cazier site, their simple graves marked only by numbers. Now, a painstaking effort led by a volunteer team of forensic pathologists, archaeologists, anthropologists, odontologists, and police officers aims to change that.
The Long Road to Giving the Unknown a Name

Since spring 2019, this multidisciplinary group has worked without pay to apply modern forensic techniques to the remains of the unidentified miners. The process combines DNA analysis, dental records, archaeological excavation, and historical research into the backgrounds of the men who descended into the pit that day. The goal is twofold: to restore the identities of the lost and to bring a sense of closure to the descendants who have lived with the ambiguity for generations.
The effort bears symbolic weight beyond the scientific. The mining disaster shaped Belgian industrial history and the lives of migrant workers—many of the victims were Italian, part of a wave of Gastarbeiter who fueled the country's post-war economy. Giving the unknown miners back their names also publicly acknowledges that sacrifice. While it is unclear how many of the 14 will ultimately be identified, the mere act of trying has resonated deeply in the region, turning a months-long forensic challenge into a living memorial.
