Devastation Across Assam’s Districts
The death toll from Assam’s monsoon floods rose to 95 after six more fatalities were reported on Wednesday, as 14 districts continued to grapple with the deluge. More than 160,600 people remain affected, with the Brahmaputra Valley districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat bearing the brunt. Sivasagar alone has accounted for 50 deaths so far, while neighbouring Charaideo has lost 21 lives.
Over 100 relief camps and distribution centres are now operational in six districts, sheltering 44,523 displaced people. Large swathes of farmland—nearly 17,000 hectares—remain submerged, and embankments, roads, and bridges have been damaged across the affected areas.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, deputed by Prime Minister Modi, visited the worst-hit Nepalikhuti area in Sivasagar district on Wednesday. He toured relief camps and later reviewed the situation with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior state officials. Nadda described the scale of devastation as “so enormous that it will take time to restore normalcy” and assured all possible central assistance.
Government Mobilisation and the Road to Recovery
The government response is being coordinated at the highest levels, with a Union minister personally assessing the damage—a signal that the Centre views this as a severe humanitarian emergency. Nadda’s presence in Sivasagar, the epicentre of the crisis, underscores the concentration of casualties in a single district, which has exposed gaps in flood preparedness and early-warning infrastructure.
The immediate priority remains running relief camps and preventing disease outbreaks in the congested shelters. With thousands of hectares of cropland destroyed, the medium-term challenge will be restoring livelihoods for farming communities, particularly in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Golaghat. While no official timeline has been given for rehabilitation, the minister’s remark that it “will take time” suggests residents should brace for a prolonged displacement phase.
