Two Recovered, Three Still Missing on Elbrus
Rescuers recovered the bodies of two climbers from Bosnia and Herzegovina on the slopes of Mount Elbrus, Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) reported on Saturday. The deceased were part of a seven-person group; the remaining three are still missing after severe weather halted operations.
The bodies were transported to the Azau clearing and handed over to an investigative task force. A storm with hurricane-force winds and near-zero visibility forced the 16-strong rescue team—comprising local guides, MChS personnel, and specialists from the Kavkaz.RF center—to suspend the search at around 6 p.m. Moscow time. Operations are scheduled to resume at 5 a.m. Sunday.
Mount Elbrus, Europe's highest peak at 5,642 meters, attracts climbers from around the world, but sudden weather changes and unregistered routes frequently lead to deadly incidents. In September 2021, five members of a 19-person expedition died on the mountain when a blizzard struck at 5,400 meters, causing hypothermia and trauma.

Elbrus's microclimate is notoriously treacherous. Wind speeds on the upper slopes can reach 40–70 meters per second, and temperatures can plunge to -20°C with visibility dropping to a single meter. MChS data shows that dozens of mountaineers require evacuation each season, and fatalities are not uncommon.
Why Rescues Are so Difficult
Mountain rescue on Elbrus demands significant resources. Operations often involve not only MChS teams but also border guards and civilian volunteers, and sometimes require aviation support to reach bodies trapped in crevasses or at extreme altitude. The current search was made even harder because the climbers reportedly had not registered their route with the authorities, a factor that regularly delays the critical first hours of a rescue. Without a registered itinerary, responders must spend precious time narrowing down the search area, during which the climbers' survival window shrinks rapidly.

While mountaineering inherently carries risk, simple precautions can make a difference. The incident underscores a long-standing warning from MChS: climbers must register their routes before ascending.
