China's Big Cat Comeback

A decade-long push to restore forests, crack down on poaching, and revive prey species has delivered a dramatic turnaround for two of Asia's most iconic predators. According to Chinese authorities, the wild Siberian tiger population has climbed from an estimated 27 in 2015 to nearly 70 today, while the critically endangered Amur leopard has risen from 42 to around 80 individuals.

The gains are concentrated in the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, a protected area spanning more than 14,000 square kilometres along the China–Russia border. Camera traps and scientific monitoring have also recorded a marked improvement in cub survival rates—from roughly 30% a decade ago to nearly 50% now—suggesting the ecosystem is becoming more secure for breeding.

Officials credit the recovery to sustained investment in habitat restoration, stronger anti-poaching patrols, and a rebound in prey such as wild boar and deer. Cross-border cooperation with Russia, which shares a contiguous population of both species, has also helped create a transboundary refuge for the cats.

Why This Recovery Matters Beyond the Borders

The numbers, while still modest, signal a meaningful conservation achievement. Both the Siberian tiger and Amur leopard remain classified as endangered, and their long-term survival depends on maintaining connected, well-protected habitats. The population uptick shows that deliberate, science-led intervention can reverse decline even for large carnivores that require vast territories.

China's approach—centred on a large national park with monitoring, prey recovery, and stringent law enforcement—offers a template for other nations struggling to protect apex predators. However, conservationists caution that the figures should be viewed in context: the absolute populations are still dangerously low, and any slip in enforcement or funding could quickly reverse the gains. The reported numbers also carry some uncertainty, as sightings and estimates can vary between surveys.

For the global conservation community, this case reinforces the message that habitat protection, rather than just captive breeding, remains the most durable route to species recovery. It also highlights the value of cross-border collaboration, as both species routinely move between China and Russia.
