Cougars, Deer and a 76% Drop in Road Collisions
Deer-vehicle collisions fall by as much as 76% in areas with healthy cougar populations, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Current Biology. The reason is behavioral: deer avoid the forest edges and roadsides where the big cats — also known as mountain lions, panthers or pumas — prefer to hunt, and spend more time deeper in the woods.
Researchers using more than 500 cameras on Washington's Olympic Peninsula found deer were 15% more likely to avoid road-adjacent areas where cougars hunt, and 86% more likely to favor heavily wooded habitat. They also shifted some of their activity to daytime. The study was led by Justin Suraci of Conservation Science Partners, working with the wildlife nonprofit Panthera, whose cougar monitoring program has run on the peninsula since 2018.
The stakes are substantial. Insurer State Farm counted 1.8 million auto insurance claims between 2022 and 2023 involving crashes with animals, with deer the most common cause, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says more than 200 people died last year in animal-vehicle crashes. Deer populations have expanded across the US over the past century as cougars, heavily hunted and stripped of habitat since European colonization, retreated to mostly western states and a remnant population in Florida.
The study has limits. It captures summer behavior, and University of Washington wildlife scientist Laura Prugh noted that deer-vehicle collisions spike sharply during the fall mating season, when deer are more distracted — leaving open whether the cougar effect holds at that time of year.
What the Cougar Study Means for Road Safety and Wildlife Policy
Suraci says the research aimed to weigh the costs and benefits of humans coexisting with large predators. The findings give conservationists and road-safety planners a rare quantified benefit to set against the well-documented costs, such as livestock losses on ranches.
A Quantified Payoff for Predator Conservation
Until now, most of the economics of predators has been written on the cost side of the ledger. This study supplies a concrete benefit: a collision reduction of more than 76% in cougar-heavy areas, in a country where deer crashes generate roughly 1.8 million insurance claims over two years and more than 200 fatalities annually. For auto insurers, even a partial version of that effect in cougar territory points to meaningfully fewer claims; for state transportation agencies, it suggests a natural complement to fencing and warning signage.
The Geography Problem
The practical reach of the finding is limited. Cougars today occupy only the western US and a small part of Florida; much of the Midwest and East, where deer-vehicle collisions are most frequent, has no cougar population to perform this function. The researchers did rule out one alternative explanation — that cougars merely reduced collisions by killing deer outright — confirming the effect is behavioral. Deer are avoiding risky habitat edges, not being removed from the environment.
What the Summer-Only Data Leaves Open
Prugh, who coauthored a 2016 modeling study of cougar recolonization and traffic risk, praised the work for filling gaps in earlier research but flagged the seasonality issue. Collisions spike in the autumn rut, when deer are more focused on mating than on predators. Whether cougar-driven avoidance persists when deer are distracted is the main open question for applying the finding elsewhere.
