Why the July 30–31 Double Meteor Shower Won’t Be a Dazzling Display

The night of July 30 into July 31 sees the coinciding peaks of two annual meteor showers: the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Alpha Capricornids. Ordinarily, this would be a highlight for skywatchers, but this year the timing is unfortunate. The peaks fall just one evening after the full Buck Moon, meaning the moon will still be at 98% illumination — flooding the sky with light and washing out all but the brightest meteors.

According to the American Meteor Society, the Delta Aquariids, which typically produce faint, fast meteors without persistent trains, will be especially hard to spot. The Alpha Capricornids, while a much weaker shower with only a handful of meteors per hour at best, are known for occasional bright fireballs that can still pierce through moonlight. So while the overall spectacle will be subdued, a patient observer may still catch a striking fireball or two.

Viewing prospects depend heavily on location. The Delta Aquariids are best seen from the southern tropics, where the radiant sits higher in the sky. For observers north of the equator, the lower radiant reduces the already compromised rate. The Alpha Capricornids are visible equally well in both hemispheres. The best window for any meteor activity is between midnight and dawn, when the sky is darkest and the radiant climbs higher.

Delta Aquariids: The Shower That Needs Darkness

The Southern Delta Aquariids are active from late July through most of August, peaking around July 30. Under ideal conditions — a moonless, dark sky from a southern-tropical location — the shower can deliver a Zenithal Hourly Rate of about 25 meteors, traveling at roughly 41 km per second. But in 2026, the combination of a 98% full moon and the shower’s naturally faint meteors (no persistent trains, few fireballs) means that the effective visible rate for most viewers will drop to just a handful per hour, if any.

The parent body is believed to be Comet 96P/Machholz, and the debris trail is well understood. The disappointment this year is purely a function of lunar glare, not any change in the meteor stream itself.

Alpha Capricornids: Fireballs as the Wildcard

The Alpha Capricornids, active from mid-July to mid-August, peak concurrently. This shower is never prolific, rarely exceeding five meteors per hour. Its claim to fame is the occasional bright fireball — a meteor that outshines even Venus. Because these fireballs can be dramatically brighter than the typical streak, a few may still be visible despite the moonlight.

So while an observer shouldn’t expect a steady show, the off‑chance of a dazzling fireball is what keeps determined watchers awake. The shower’s even visibility across hemispheres means no one is excluded, though light pollution from cities will compound the moon’s effect.

How to Make the Most of a Moon-Washed Meteor Shower

If you still want to look up, here’s what to do:

  • Go out between midnight and pre‑dawn. This is when the sky is darkest and the radiant points are highest for both showers.
  • Find the darkest spot you can. Get away from city lights; even with the moon, rural or coastal locations will offer a clearer view.
  • Look broadly, not just at the radiants. Meteors can appear in any part of the sky, so a wide, unobstructed view improves your chances.
  • Target your region. Viewers in the southern United States, Mexico and the Caribbean have the best shot at seeing Delta Aquariids. The Alpha Capricornid fireballs are visible globally.
  • Be patient and watch for fireballs. If a bright Alpha Capricornid zooms by, it will be worth the wait — but don’t expect a steady show.
