Vegetable and fruit prices at Egypt’s main Obour wholesale market on Friday 31 July 2026 showed notable differences between varieties, according to the market’s own daily report.

Tomatoes ranged from EGP 5 to 10 per kilo, while potatoes fetched EGP 13–20. Onions saw a split: white onions at EGP 7–11 and red onions at EGP 6.5–8.5. Courgettes (zucchini) traded between EGP 5 and 15, and carrots without tops were EGP 10–20. Green beans and okra both stood at EGP 20–40 per kilo, while molokhia leaves came in at EGP 5–10. Aubergines varied by type: local baladi aubergines were EGP 3–6, romi aubergines EGP 2–5, and white aubergines EGP 3–6. Peppers also showed a wide band: romi peppers EGP 3–9, hot peppers EGP 4–8, and coloured peppers a steeper EGP 15–35.

Cucumbers (both local and greenhouse-grown) sold for EGP 8–12, garlic was EGP 20–40, and local lemons unusually wide at EGP 10–50 per kilo. Among fruits, local yellow and red grapes ranged from EGP 30 to 50, while crimson and black grapes reached EGP 35–53. Local apples were EGP 35–65 and imported apples EGP 50–100 per kilo. Figs (barshoomi) stood at EGP 20–30, guavas EGP 15–25, pomegranates EGP 20–30, and summer melons (cantaloupe and shammam) EGP 8–12. Local arishi peaches brought EGP 35–65. Imported nectarines cost EGP 70, Victoria plums were EGP 20–50, local kheshabi pears EGP 30–50, while imported pears hit EGP 150 per kilo.

Seasonal Supply and Price Spreads

Wide price ranges are common in Egypt’s wholesale produce markets at this time of year, reflecting varying quality, size and the tail-end of harvesting cycles for summer crops. The spread on okra and green beans (EGP 20–40 each) suggests supply is tightening as peak summer output passes, pushing top-quality lots higher while still offering lower grades. In contrast, tomatoes and aubergines (especially romi) are at the cheap end of their seasonal band, indicating ample supply and relatively weak demand.

The gap between local and imported fruit remains stark. Imported pears at EGP 150 per kilo compared with local varieties at EGP 30–50 illustrates the premium importers can command, tied to currency dynamics and freight costs. Lemons displaying an extreme EGP 10–50 range could hint at variable quality or temporary shortages of prime-grade fruit. Overall, the price snapshot reinforces a pattern of abundant summer staples but expensive imported alternatives.

Consumers should bear in mind that these are wholesale (first-sale) price bands, so retail prices in neighbourhood markets and supermarkets will be higher, often by EGP 5–20 per kilo depending on the item and location. The data suggest that tomatoes, local aubergines and molokhia are currently the most budget-friendly fresh options, while okayra, garlic and imported apples and pears are likely to be relatively costly at the checkout.
