The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has outlined an interim action to tackle mercury contamination in the lower two miles of Wappinger Creek, from the base of the falls to the Hudson River in Dutchess County. The proposal focuses on the upper portion of the site, where the highest concentrations of mercury in sediment and stream banks pose the greatest risk of washing downstream.
Under the plan, crews would excavate contaminated material, backfill the cleared areas, and restore the affected creek bed and banks. The work is not a final remedy for the entire Superfund site, but a targeted move to get the worst pollution out of the water more quickly while studies continue for a permanent cleanup.
Once the excavation is finished, the EPA will monitor the site to ensure the interim step is containing the mercury as intended. That data will also shape the eventual comprehensive cleanup strategy.
