Blaze Erupts at Pig Farm in Kurgan's Snezhnaya Village

A large fire broke out at a pig farm in the village of Snezhnaya, Ketovsky district, Kurgan region, early on the morning of 31 July. The livestock complex covered approximately 4,500 square meters. When fire crews arrived, thick smoke had already filled the structure because the interior was lined with combustible plastic materials, according to the regional emergency ministry (EMERCOM).

The toxic fumes proved fatal for 2,500 piglets inside. Firefighters managed to rescue another 2,500 animals. The blaze was concentrated in a 300-square-meter section and was localized after 2.5 hours; open flames were fully extinguished half an hour later. A total of 33 personnel and nine units of firefighting equipment were deployed to the scene.

What the Fire Reveals About Agricultural Building Risks

The fire’s rapid spread and high death toll highlight the inherent danger of using plastic-based interior finishes in agricultural buildings. Such materials, often chosen for ease of cleaning, produce dense, toxic smoke when ignited, leaving little time for animals to escape. While the overall footprint of the complex was large, the fire itself remained confined to a relatively small area, yet half the herd perished because of smoke inhalation. The incident may prompt renewed attention to fire safety standards and material choices on livestock farms in the region, where similar construction practices could pose risks.
