A magnitude 4.1 earthquake shook northern Chile on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, at 07:12 local time. The National Seismological Center (CSN) placed the epicentre 57 kilometres from Calama, at a depth of 78 kilometres. No casualties or damage were reported immediately after the event.
The tremor originated at latitude -22.088 and longitude -68.554, in a sparsely populated part of the Antofagasta Region. Because the quake occurred at considerable depth and distance from population centres, ground shaking at the surface was faint and posed no danger to infrastructure or daily life.
Chile’s emergency authorities reminded residents to rely only on official bulletins for information and to remain attentive to possible aftershocks. The CSN continues to monitor the area, but no unusual seismic pattern has been detected.
